[Mk2] [NA] Replacing the gearbox oil, how much oil to fill the box?

Post by c3pete0 »

Hello, I am going to drain and replace the car box oil in my Rev 4 NA with some Redline MT 90. Does anyone know the volume of oil required to fill the box?

off the top of my head i cant remember the figure but fill it until it comes out of the filling hole :)
3.8 litres for those with a LSD, and 4.1 litres for those without.

Oil

Post by Ja99a »

Just done this 5 mins ago on a turbo box.

its about 4 litres, when its empty.
1 make sure that the sump plug is in and secure.
2 you need to make sure the car is level then remove the fill level plug on the front of the box (from under the car) put something under the car to collect the spill.
3. undo the fill bolt, then fill from the topm till it leaks out of the fill hole.
4 replace all bolts

Incedentally lots of peeps seem to think that you fill the gbox using the fill level bolt hole, this is just for making sure the ammount you put in is correct some should seep out when there is enough oil (just like on motor bikes).

The fill hole is in the top of the gbox its a 23mm bolt in the top near what looks like a gbox breather inline with the starter motor.

Just fill till it leaks out of the fill hole.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the that. I will use those instructions when I do the box oil change at the weekend. The handbook states box capacity is only 2.6 litres but everywhere else people who've done the oil change are saying around 4 litres. I'll go with those who've actually done the change. Thanks again.

Pete, go with the handbook's 2.6 litres - the NA Gearbox is completely different to that on the turbo.

If you get 3 quarts of MT90 that should fill the box.

Also, we do have a 10% IMOC discount setup on gearbox oil - details are in the Premium Members section.

BTW - remove the filler plug before the drain plug!!

otherwise if it doesnt/wont come out your screwed if youve already drained it.
