Just back from 1st outing on track in Mk1 track car

Post by steveybMR2-173 »

Absolutely shattered! had an excellent, excellent day at Donnington in our maiden voyage in the MR2 Only Magazine Mk1 track nail, five of us drove the car today with mixed experience and ability, which was a great learning curve. Only a few problems all things considering.

Started the morning tag team style, as the day was not sessioned we exhanged drivers a bit too quickly this morning, after about an hour and a half my lap was cut short by wisps of steam coming from the engine lid, (concentrating on the track and the mirror I hadnt noticed the temp needle go off the red!!) luckily I was an the last stage of the circuit and limped to the pits, by now full on billowing! overcooked it and a pipe had blown of the expansion tank, within minutes the mk1 has spat out all of its coolant geyser style. After cooling the car down and putting in some more water it was fine until this afternoon when it happened again, this time we noticed the rad was stone cold, and realised there was the mother of all air locks in the system, bled it and ok agan until last thing, looks like we either have a knackered thermostat or head gasket issues (Doh!)

Baring in mind how many laps the car got abused with today she has done us proud, the GT4 brakes worked a treat (thanks Si and all of last weeks restoration show team!!) A friend of ours Karl came over and drove the car, being an experienced track driver but never driving a mk1 before, he left Donington asking me to find him one he can buy!!

We all avoided dipping in the kittly little although I probable came the closest on a damp lap, inexperience caught me out, the back slid out a bit too far which I completely over re-acted to which ended up in an almighty tank slapper! although I did keep the car on the track.

As said there was a big difference in experience of all who drove today, this was my first day at Donnington, Ive drived Curborough in my Golf Gti Days, and have visited the Nurburgring a few times, but driven it fairly sedately in two different cars that I cared for, so today driving a car solely intended to the track was very educational. Me, Andy and Martin sensibly drove to our own abilities today, where as Simon and Karl very much more experienced showed us what the car was capable of, which all were very impressed with, given that the car is standard other than the big brakes, and has a different brand of tyre on each corner.

My favourite part of the day was Simon taking us out on a spirited drifting wet lap!

Learned loads, and we now have a benchmark for improvements for the car, 1st job, fix the overheating, got a new rad to put on, will change the thermostat and flush and replace coolant, then we need to think about dampers and springs, stripping weight, seats, and harnesses, and a cage, the list endless really.

Managed to drive the car back to Stoke which was a bonus, although I had taken the fixed bar with us just in case.

Looking forward to preparing the turbo engine for next years track days, but I for one can definitely say that the N/A 4AGE is more than adequate for now!

Full report will be in MR2 Only magazine with articles by myself, Simon, Martin and Celine of MR2DC with lots of photos of all todays MR2s by our cameraman Luke, and Allan Farrimond of MR2DC, I will also post up photos on www.mr2only.com as soon as I have them

a few photos so far, lots more to follow:-

Just got home and unloaded the car, Currently defrosting my ears and feet!! Had a excellent day, Cheers to Simon for the passenger laps and for showing us that the MK1 does go sideways in a controlled manner in the rain/snow with a mixed selection of nanglop ditch finder tyres!!!

Cheers to everyone for the help when the car did it's kettle impression a few times!! Have to replace the rad, thermostat and flush the system through and see how we go from there. We were really impressed with how the MK1 handled and how it went too!! Really impressed a few of our non MR2 owning mates on the passenger laps we took them on and Karl who drove it for a few laps was impressed too. We had a few brown trouser moments between us today but nothing serious and a good day was had by all!!

Need to get my own project done and dusted so i can help Steve out with the MK1 a bit more and get it ready for the next track day.

Andy (Woo Hoo!!! My feet starting to change from blue to a normal colour!!!)

You might wanna replace that cracked expansion tank cap that is sucking loads of air into your cooling system. I'm pretty sure that is the root of your cooling issues.

Just something i noticed at the resto show. Get rid of the crappy opaque white mk1 version that cracks badly and replace it with a nice black one. I have a spare if you want it.

I had the same problem with the tank. Mine was cracked aswell and blew a fountain of coolant on the track aswell :) Fixed it with a black one and all is well.

Yeah thanks guys, Id forgotton about that knackered cap until the first time we had a fountain yesterday, if you have a spare one, pm me Mk1chris will take it off your hands!

Just to be on the safe side we will replace the thermostat as well, and the radiator doesnt look to clever, the one on our scrapper looks newer, so that will be changed before our next outing

I don't know whether you have already done this or not Steve, but when you swap rads you'd probably be as well to lose the fans off the replacement rad

It was a good day, my favourite part of the day was probably the few laps I did in the Mk1 too, my turbo is obviously much faster but its so much hard work to keep the thing on the track at the limit (which while rewarding in itself is very tiring) it was nice to spend a few gentle laps in the mk1 enjoying the lovely predictable handling and the gentle slides, this is even more of an incentive to get my SC up and running!

Cheers guys!

The cooling system on the MR2 is very efficient, the fans very rarely come on, only really in traffic.

So a lot of the challenge cars/track day cars whip them off as they are heavy. I myself have removed mine, but I did notice the temps creaping up in the morning commute so have a lightweight plastic fan i'm putting on a switch,

If your cooling system is in good order, your very unlikely to ever hear the fans coming on in normal driving. I've only heard them once in the time I've had the car and that was when I disconnected the temperature sensor to check that they did work.
So you could remove them to save weight. Or remove them and replace them with 1 lightweight fan if you wanted to be sure.
Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour

Since I bought the car in 1994 the fans have only ever come on once in my mk1b.

It was during an MOT and the MOT guy was showing me that the rad drain tap was slightly leaking with the engine running and hot. They had left the car idling for the whole MOT duration.

I was stood right under the fans (car on ramps with me stood under it) and was just reaching up to tighten the tap and the fans came on. :!:

They come on suddenly with full force and it was like a mini explosion as a few years worth of dust flew out over me!

Even on a big pulleyed Supercharger you can get rid of the fans.

Mine have never come on.

And Steve / Andy,

Now you've done your first trackday in it, get booked up for Cadwell Park or Oulton Park or Anglesey. I like Donington a lot but it's a power track. If you want the ultimate experience Cadwell is the place to go! :D

I went on Monday and we had a fantastic time! \:D/ (even in the snow  )

Videos will be posted shortly.....

The only times mine come on is when I go to start it after a few hot laps and a short time with the engine off in the paddock - basically heatsoak. They only stay on a few seconds though.

Think we will lose them fans then when we replace the Radiator, I've got a smaller slimline fan we can stick on it.
