Cracking idea mate! Will be keeping tabs on the developments!!!

All the points I can think of have been mentioned, however I would mind a costing estimate for this work!

IMHO a difficult task, but respect for giving it a go. You will need to add loads of strengthening to maintain the rigidity of the body, perhaps you could add a Lotus style backbone chassis strengthening in the centre tunnel, and maybe move the fuel tank into the nose. It will never be as stiff as a coupe though....

its a hard thing to quote for to be honest mate, we will never recover the cost for its initial development, which is not an issue, i dont want to go spouting figures off the cuff to realise later it is not correct and has lead people up the garden path, having said that, im sure its not a sellable product if its anymore than 3k.

Having had a number of dropheads in the past,my wish-list would be:

1. A solid folding roof a la Mercedes SLK

If cost forbids,

2. A colour coded cloth roof with glass h.r.w. and WATERTIGHT.

3 A detachable hard-top for winter.

Good luck

Fonzy, sounds good mate!!

Looking forward to you cracking this one.

Just a question, are you getting an automotive designer/company to help out? No disrespect intended whatsoever but in my experience (as a designer) engineers don't always follow the design language of existing products etc as well as a trained designer.....

Good luck!!

I would have thought a solid folding roof would be serious wonga in R&D terms, look at the 206cc, muchos problems with their folding roof and they are a mahoosive company. Ok they are french I suppose....

im looking forward to seeing this one fonzy,im actually working on the very same thing on a mk1, but my version (if i ever manage to work around all of the problems) will only be available as a conversion to t-bar models...ive already sourced a suitable roof that copies the mk1 roof shape, just working on ways to get it all water tight and wind noise free.

I chopped the roof off a scrap coupe last year to have an "exploratory" look at what would be involved.....on a mk1 its a total no go for the coupes, far too much work needed but the t-bars have the strength in the windscreen pillars and less work needed to make a roof fit and seal onto the original header.

I expect my mk1 version to be ready next year (if at all) but i wont be doing any customers conversions until its 100% tested and fault free, that includes no leaks, limited wind noise, neat stowing including a press studded leather cover, reinforced chassis and above all insurance compliant. My version should look very close if not the same as the factory commissioned rag tops released in the states (only 15 cars built, pics below)

That would do me on mine, a T-bar conversion. Would love that..... Has anyone done it to a MK2? :-k
