MY FIRST MR2

Post by Davidvincent »

Hello Everybody,
I have just bought A 1995 MR2 Revision 3 Turbo, and just looking through the numerous answers and comments, there seems to be quite a difference in the reported Horse Power derived from this engine.

My handbook suggests that it is 245 BHp, but according to the importers from Japan, this car would be limited to about 130 ish Horse power untill
the limiter chip on the back of the speedo is altered.
Apparently changing this chip will also convert the speedo and odometer to M/ph...
Does any of this sound correct to any one?

Thanks for your help...David

welcome to the club mate. Its not the engine thats restricted its just a top speed limiter - restricted to 112mph as all japenese cars are - easily sorted with a speed llimit defencer though i beleive there is a device to do both this and change the readings to mph, someone else will be able to better advise you on that one. Your handbook is correct with the 245bhp output

I thought most importers did a mph conversion when getting up to uk spec...

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question on the speedo and the Hp.
I was taking the information given to me by these importers with a pinch of salt.
One was in buckinghamshire and the other in Bedfordshire.
And with regards to the mph conversion, the face on the speedo has been changed to mph, but I am assuming that if the chip hasn't been changed on the back of the speedo then the oddmeter will be clocking up in kmh still.
Then again if the standard mod is to simply put a different face on the speedo clock and let the oddometer register in kmh, does changing this chip alter the oddometer to mph?
Anyway this is day 4 with this car, and boy isn't it fun.

Best regards to everyone..David

yup fun yes.

rain and turbo lag... no fun....

dont hoof it outta corners either until ur used to it....

i have spoken to many tubby noobs...

and heard many old tales of owners having their cars less than a year b4 they wrote them off...

just careful... thats all...

i mean now i know my na so well i beat the tubbies through the corners. even overtake on the outside of the corners :P all nice.. but they get their own back when the turbine spools up heheheh

Are turbo's dangerous out of corners in the dry as well as the wet, or can you really drive hard in good conditions?

you can drive them hard in dry conditions so long as your tyres are ok and you have wide enough tyres on the rear.

in the wet, you gotta drive like a granny, feathering the throttle etc.

they are only dangerous if you drive beyond your abilities. They can be driven quickly but it takes a level of skill that is probably beyond the level of the average owner (whatever that is!).

Other cars can be hooned around with impunity and are a lot more forgiving.

Basically i would say if you can't drive it quickly in the wet then you are pushing your luck if you drive 'hard' in dry conditions. Most people don't get beyond the grip limit in dry conditions, but when it rains that grip limit is seriously reduced so it is easier to breach it.

i.e. 14" alloys + sha88ed tyres + wet = wrong way down the road with MGF owner jaw scraping the black top!

scary. !!!! adrenaline was almost the same colour as a french army officers uniform!
