e-mail notifications a couple of days late...

Post by jrleech »

I've noticed that recently, the e-mail notifications for topic replies or you have pm have been rather slow arriving, sometimes upto a day or two late.

Is this a short term problem, or is it just going to get worse due to increased users.

I presume others are having this problem and not just me?

Thanks,
Jon

Thanks... Just got this one now, approx 12 hours later.

I'll switch my e-mail address back to blueyonder and see if that speeds it up!

Thanks,
Jon

mmmm, interesting.... Now I've moved my notifications from 123-reg back to Blueyonder, they're coming through spot on time.

Must be 123-reg.... will stick with Blueyonder.

Thanks,
Jon

Been with AOL for years same email and the last few weeks not getting

PM email notification, except for the odd random garage notification?

Any one else experiencing the same AOL?

Might need to change email?

Apparently the Imoc notification is perceived by AOL as spam...grhh.

Oh well. :)

I'm not with AOL (I use a random Australian host for mail) but rarely get any notifications from IMOC, they don't appear in my spam folders either.

Once in a while it will work for a day or two and then it goes quiet again, I don't post much though so it's not a huge problem.

If anyone wants a Gmail account, pm me with your current email address and I will invite you.

Seems to work fine for me \:D/

There are no delays for email leaving the site and there haven't been any problems in over 9 months now. The problem (I'm afriad) tends to be with your email service provider and so outside our direct control.

Email service providers (SP's) will filter incoming mail for spam as typically about 80% of all email inbound to mail servers is spam :( - as a result they often do misclassify automated emails from IMOC, such as topic reply notifications, as spam.

Another potential explanation for apparently random delays - another anti-spam approach is for the system accepting the mail to refuse to handle it the first time delivery is attempted - forcing the sending system to store and retry the email later. Usually spammers don't bother storing the email and retrying but genuine mail will be - but of course this causes you a delay in getting a response.

Its not possible to exactly tell what approach (of many possible options) is being used, and SPs will adapt their methods to fight spam - some being better than others I'm afraid.

Ben.
