cool. sounds like you have it sussed. It's just I hate people who say it's mint/ excellent. then it turns to be a dog. Have had it happen to me when I saw a red rev2. it had rusty arches FFs. needed a new head gasket. had no handbreak. no service history. I asked him when the cambelt was last done... "whats a cambelt" . the list goes on

The engine failed spectacularly a month later, without warning, on a head gasket that was replaced 9 months before I bought the car, the then minty arches are now showing considerable rust 6 months later and it looks like many many years ago the rear bumper was replaced with a pre rev and colour matched. The wiper arms were modified to take cheap 3rd party blades, badly. The broken telescopic antenna turned out to be a 3rd party static one and no salvagable parts to rebuild an automatic. I just got unlucky on the engine, the rest of it is really really easy to fix, as and when i get odds and sods from the scrappie.

I was unlucky on the engine. The rest was minor stuff down to numptie ownership.

This is a walk in the park compared to the scrapheap challenge that was my last car, something major went wrong, costing over 500 quid, every 2 months on that thing. I broke 2 half shafts a month apart, blew a gearbox seal and dumped all the gearbox oil into the clutch needing both a new clutch and a gearbox rebuild, Rear suspenstion was showing warning signs of bushes going, Blew a radiator, went through two sets of discs and pads in 6 months thanks to the 70-0-70-0-70... of the chichester bypass during rush hour every day, Broke the clutch fork release lever, had it welded back on, broke the clutch cable, changed it myself... I gave up when I lost 5th gear.

Car came in handy when I blew the engine on the '2, ended up screaming off to work in 4th every day for a month while i saved up for and located an engine and mechanic to fix it. Car made it till a week before the '2 was due back, broke the weld on the clutch release lever, rented a 1.2 punto for a week. Aside from a minor coolant leak which was easy to fix and some minor niggles the MR2 has been fine since, quite literally the most reliable car ive owned, erm, of 2 cars.

Joys of motoring eh?

Make sure that the screaming chicken decals are present on the rear bumper, Also make sure the engine is cold before you test drive, and listen for odd noises. Also take the pressure cap off the cooling system before you warm the engine up, rev the car using the throttle assembly on the tripod thing on the rocker cover and look for bubbles.

I just hope this bloke who's selling it doesn't rabbit on about this and trhe other.....conversations on the phone have meant I have had to listen to him repeating himself all the time about how good this and that is etc etc.
I'm gonna poke around and prod this and that....etc etc...taking a mate too so he'll help me out.
I hate this part of the selling/buying bit.
BTW. He has the curretn MoT with the car but not the log book....mmm Im suspicious....but he said he's selling it (He is a trader BTW) on behalf of his wealthy mate who lives in the village...works in London.
Im not going to put any deposit down on the vehicle until I have seen the reg doc.It looks really genuine. All OE stickers etc...tool kit....extremely clean interior, new cambelt will be done. Has an owners manual with it still.....

I take it the wealthy mate actually has the V5? Personally I wouldn't touch a car without one, especially nowadays that the rules and regulations have been tightened. I'm surprised any trader worth his salt would handle a car, be it mates rates or whatever, without having all the documentation to hand. That's just my opinion.

I'd strongly suggest getting the name and address of the actual owner and either contacting them direct, and or getting an HPI check on the vehicle.

I know it can be hard but you shouldnt go to view a car and be so sure about buying it, other wise you may regret it when the car you just got aint so great a few months down the line.

I havent bought it....nor would I ever do so without seeing the V5 mate.
Thsi bloke is honest. He understood this when I explained it to him...no V5 = No sale...simple enough.
If he doesnt get it. Then I go elsewhere and he loses out...

(c: Being fussy - the V5 is nothing to do with ownership - it just tells the authorities the name of the keeper of the car - the one who's responsible for speeding offences, parking tickets and other associated fines/points. When you buy the car make sure you get a receipt (reciept...no, receipt) from the seller with his/her signature, the amount, the reg of the car and any other extras you may have agreed as part of the sale.

Sounds like a top deal too! The Mk1's are fantastic little cars, mine still thinks it's a go-kart. I've just ordered more bits for mine...and I need to book more track days (c:
