Excuse the Numpty question on Rolling Roads and Limiters

Post by CosmosblueMR2 »

Reet then...

Seeing as I've organsied a RR day in June for the South East ... I've recently thought of a question (probably all laugh at me now but I'll ask it anyway #-o )

On the Rolling Road they generally up gears to 4th and then slowly boot it up to the redline yes ?..

My question is... if you still have the speed limiter on your car (112mph) what happens ? - does the car reach this 112mph and then cut out like it does on the road - I mean how will they be able to take it to the redline for a full graph ?

<runs for cover .. preparing for backlash   >

Quite simple - they can't redline it. Although I think some RR's use 3rd gear, which would mean you wouldn't hit 112mph, and therefore should be okay. Easiest thing is to phone them and find out :)

I must admit, I've asked a similar question before and have been told (by various people) that 4th gear is used.

Perhaps we should get an IMOC-UK Rolling Roads FAQ put together?

I think its more of a case of them simply planting their foot to the floor in 4th and then letting it run up to the redline.

you can do it in third but it does muck up the power readings etc.

*would just like to point out i am not getting into rolling road debates.

that's my point Lauren... I would hit the Speed Limiter before it hits the redline in 4th !

Maybe I should investigate over-riding this limiter thing-a-me-bob

It's usually 4th gear as most cars have a 1:1 ratio for 4th, whereas 5th is generally an overdrive ratio (around ~0.8:1).

APEXI RSM £140 looks cool delimits, times 0-60's etc logs top speed revs etc fits nicely in the ashtray and is easy to fit with really good instructions.

So I take it that everyone that has Rolling Roaded has removed or bypassed this Speed limiter ?

just pull the cable drive (rev1) or electrical connector (rev 2 onwards) off the gearbox when you do the run, youll get an engine check light but it wont matter

Just as an extra 'Numpty question' does having aftermarket alloys effect the results?
Not being a total numpty I'm gonna answer it myself and say YES, but can anyone be bothered working out what effect those over diameter tyres have?

power is power no matter what size wheels you have on, the rwhp reading is exactly what is there! The difference is minimal, makes more of a change to aceleration and top speed.

Ahh, my confusium.
When we did sums in school I remembered something about this thingy called 'moment' which was the way to express a turning force (force x distance).
For some crazy reason I thought that having less distance from the turning point (axle) to the point of transfer (tyre) would allow the dyno roller to be turned with greater force.
