[Mk2] [NA] Call me stupid but.....

Post by snarf »

1. How do i find a fault code?
2. as above but with a vehicle that won't start?
3. how do i test to see if either the distibutor or coil is dead? (there is no spark at plugs).
4. check that it's not the factory fitted immobilliser thats gone pop, stopping it starting?

Your best bet with each of these questions is to seperate them into each correct section. That way you will get a better aimed response.
1. How do i find a fault code?
will go into General
2. as above but with a vehicle that won't start?
also in General
3. how do i test to see if either the distibutor or coil is dead? (there is no spark at plugs).
will go into Electrical
4. check that it's not the factory fitted immobilliser thats gone pop, stopping it starting?
should go into Ice & Security

Let me know when you have re-posted into the correct sections and i will remove this post for you.

   Lol-very helpful response there-the guy's obviously really stuck here, and sounds like he has a MECHANICAL problem with his car #-o
Kinda sums it up really-lol.

Snarf-to check for error codes, read this really helpful link on MR2OC:

http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/codes/

There's also a page here about resetting the ECU here:

http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/Knowledge_Base/o ... id=32.html

Check the ECU for codes, and go from there mate-good luck getting it sorted.

Sorry could not resist.

Check the error codes as above, it's easier then it looks. A friend had the exact same problem and the codes were spot on.
Think it was the coil.

You kidding?
I'm surprised it took two days for that joke to be posted!

Without offending- have you tried the search function on IMOC?
There are fault code listings somewhere in the depths of the storage.
I am going to live forever, or die trying!

Fault codings! yeah i've got the link to see which code it is but i don't have the "Check engine" light up in my car. Do i need it on display before i do the diagnostic code check?

I reckon too it may be the coil but need to confirm it before buying one, thats why i'm looking for a test i can do on it and the distributor too if possible. i have a voltage test meter at my disposal!

You sould be getting the light flash even if there is nothing wrong (i think),
Are using the paper clip and then turning the ignition on?

No.... i asumed that unless the "check engine" light came on the diagnostic fault codes were not accessable.

Not always, Just use a metal paper clip/pin, and join up TE1 and E1, put the car to ignition only and check for flashs.

Tooe me a few times to get the correct code. Good luck.

Tried that but get no flashes, in fact the "check engine"light doesn't even appear at all!

I've shorted the HT lead from the coil to ground and turned the engine over without getting a spark , so it's looking at maybe replacing the coil unless i can test it for a fault?

A feed wire behind the immobiliser is where mine was. Had to remove part of drivers side under dash panel.
Once you locate wiring to unit it will be obvious.
