[Mk2] [Turbo] CAM BELT AND HEAD GASKET CHANGE REV 2 TURBO

Post by Andy »

Hi Everyone

I'm soon to have a go at fitting a new cam belt and head gasket to my Rev2 Turbo. I have never had to change these parts on any of the MR2's that I've owned over the years.
I have decided to remove the engine to do the work and do a few other bits and pieces while its out.

Can anyone offer any tips on the best way to get the engine out , I have axles stands , engine crane etc.
I have tried to find a "How To" guide on the net without much luck so far

Here's how i did mine.

Firstly, have a camera to hand and take plenty of photos. It makes putting it all back together much easier.
Drive front wheels onto ramps.
You can now remove, unclip or unbolt all the parts from above while rear of car is on the ground.
Jack up car, install axle stands at side jacking points and remove or unbolt exhaust, gear cables, clutch slave cylinder etc.
Keep taking photos.
At this point I removed the plastic undertrays and drained the coolant from the service bolt on the pipes under the car.
If you are going to remove sump etc then you may also want to drain engine oil too.
You need to decide if you want to remove engine, subframe and driveshafts as a complete unit or split as you go along dismantling.

As I was replacing the suspension at the same time I separated everything as I went along.
Remove front and rear engine mounts.
Undo but not withdraw side engine mount bolts.

Place pallet or similar under engine.

Connect chain etc to engine hooks and take up slack.

Slowly remove side engine mount bolts. If everything has been removed/released the engine should now be ready to lower onto pallet.

Re-install side engine mount bolts to use as lifting points for chain.

Lift car until engine can be slid from underneath.

And....as they say in all good books, re-fitting is the reversal of removal.

I did have a link to a very useful site, with pics, but I don't seem to have it any longer.

There is also a section on removing the engine in the BGB: http://www.mr2-tech.com/bgb/mechanical/ ... anical.htm

This is what I recently followed :)
