I'm not trying to take over this thread but i still have the original cd and tape player that came out of my mk1 Super Edition Supercharger.
I have been thinking of selling it on Ebay but still not sure yet! not sure whether it's worth selling now, or leave it for a few more years.
I'm almost certain that it's the same system that was in most of the JDM cars!

Cheers for all the great replies guys :D

At the moment I do have an FM transmitter but the quality is pretty bad as im still using it through the original stereo and speakers. I think if im going to get a new headunit i may as well get one with a decent connection rather the hoping an FM transmitter will sound ok.

That stereo is a little too retro for me HT :D

Is there any chance you have some more info on your CD/Tape player steve?

I wouldn't bother trying too hard to get a modern radio that looks like it was made in the 80s, they are very expensive. There are a lot of new ones that complement the MR2s interior quite well. I have this in my car, looks really good i think. It sounds great too and has ipod connection on the front and on the back. Can take a pic of it fitted in if u like.

Agree - anything uncluttered (like above), is fine. The original digital unit makes quite good sound anyway, so long as the speakers are upgraded

The iPod interface that connects to the CD changer port is definitely the way forward. It gives you track/artist information on the head unit and the ability to navigate via the head unit, just as if you had a CD changer fitted. You can easily route the iPod connection into the glove box and keep your iPod out of sight.

I sourced a Panasonic F35 radio cassette for mine, and was supposed to be the 'top of the range' (aren't they all?) when it was on the market in '88, so just the right age.
It came from a 'F' reg 944 and has 'high power' plus a 3.5mm socket for the MP3 player. The display changes to 'CD' when in use. No RDS, traffic, just numerals on the LCD display.

I'm running 4.5" Infinity's in the front, and 6X9" JBL's in MDF boxes behind the seats. It has a pre-out for a Panasonic amp, but so far I've not been able to find one. But the acid test, how does it sound? In a word 'brilliant'!

But the really sad thing is, I can remember seeing them on display in the hifi shop new! I opted for a Pioneer with the brand new 6cd multi changer back then though.

If you want to hear it, well, see me at a meet or show.

My new stereo arrived today! :D It's a Pioneer DEH-P77MP.
I've ordered some infinity speakers and an ipod adapter to go with it and will be installing it on the weekend.
Does anyone know if the Infinity speakers are likely to come with enough wire and connectors?

Yeah they will be in the same locations. I've got some 4" Infinity Kappas for the front and some 3.5" ones for the back. Is the standard wire going to be OK?

Should be - I've used 10cm front/9cm rear alpine's in mine with standard wiring, which sound ace, I suppose if into serious ICE it wouldn't be up to scratch.

Thanks Guys! :D

This may sound a bit dumb but the speaker inputs on my stereo look like auxillary ones. Will I need to get some connecters to wire it all up?

If it has an ISO connector on the rear you can buy a lead that mates to the standard toyota wiring. HTH

I've ordered an ISO to Toyota adapter, but im not sure what connections the standard MR2 speaker wires will have. :?

On the back of my stereo i have 6 female auxillary type inputs. (Fronts L+R, Rear L+R, and Sub L+R) but im not sure if im going to have to buy some male auxillary type connecters for the ends of the original toyota wires. If you know what I mean....

You just need the ISO. Those are for a sub etc.

Just caught up with this - looks very nice Sam!
I hope you don't mind me asking, but how much and where from?
(no problem if you don't mind answering the how much!)
It is along the lines of the old model I was on about - but slightly different...

Right, HT has pretty much beaten me to it, but you should basically get some wire with no connectors on the ends with the speakers (never had Infinity speakers, so not certain on this one, but should be and I know that JVC, Pioneer and Sony do bundle a length of wire with their speakers). The wire that the speakers come with is really quite cheap quality though. It'll be somewhat better than the 17+ year old wire in the '2 but if you can afford it, it may be worth getting some alternative wire. This is of course if you're planning to change the wires. On my last personal ICE installation I couldn't be bothered and still use the same old wires that were in the car (also 16 years old) and although I know that sorting those out would be one are of improvement, they work just fine.

Now on the speakers end, there should be what's called a crimp connector for the speakers. Having not yet personally looked at an MR2 standard speaker yet I don't know what connections they've got, but the last time I did this (again my French car) the car had a proprietary plug going to the speakers which I had to cut off and then attach a crimp connectors onto the wire. Modern speakers have a flat connector (one a different size from the other) which you slide the crimp connector onto.
(the crimp connector looks like this:

)
It should be quite straightforward to connect the cable to the speakers.

As for the headunit end, as HT has said you can get an ISO adapter block which you can convert the old connections in the '2 to the ISO standard. It's just a simple plug and play! Unless if your car has no connector block behind the current Headunit (if someone has already hacked it off) in which case it's abit more complicated and probably best not to cover it here unless you really need to!

I hope I haven't confused you! If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask...

Yup - HT is right - you just need the ISO. Those connections are there if you ever decide you want to add an amplifier or subwoofer later on - you wire those up directly to the aux type sockets rather than the ISO connection.

Make sure that the Toyota adapter covers the Mk1 year. I may be wrong on this but I have a feeling that I read somewhere that Toyota changed their adapters in the early '90s...

Cheers Max,
I bought the head unit from eBay for £130. May seem a bit steep, but it's supposed to retail at over £300!!. There were a couple for about £90 but had scratches and no box or instructions.

I bought the speakers for "iceclearout" who have a shop on eBay, but I gave them a ring to see how much postage would be with a few other bits. The speakers cost £48 for the fronts and £34 for the rears.

I also bought a Pioneer iPod adapter which is apparently difficult to use but has decent sound quality.

I just hope I dont fry the thing while connecting it up!!

Yeah, I thought they originally retailed at that which is why I asked...!
(scurries off to ebay!)

Difficult to use in use itself or in terms of set up?

If you're that worried wire it all up except for power then double check everything with a multimeter before plugging it in.
Might be easier if battery is disconnected too before starting (I always do this anyway).
Whereabouts are you? Maybe worth finding someone local to you who's willing to check out your wiring and connections for a few beer tokens?
