Had a nice dash with a gto this morning.


Was nice and sunny but still a little damp from the rain during the night.
I had my boost set to 1.15 bar which should see over 300bhp at the fly.

It was black with a daft aftermarket spoiler, which was far too big, gold alloy wheels and a large single exit, aftermarket exhaust.

I was behind coming onto a roundabout, and then dual carraigeway for about 400 yards to another roundabout and then just under a quarter mile to the next rounabout
Came off the roundabout in second onto a slight left hand bend.
He went for it with a small black puff of smoke, but all i got was wheel spin!
Once i got straightened up i punched the throttle again, reeling him in.
Only a few hundred yards till the next roundabout, so slowed passing a slower car on the inside lane, so we couldnt use the full width of the road.
Again straightened up but got wheel spin in second, he was off.

3rd slots home and im reeling him in at an unbelievable rate.
I was over the moon with the rate i reeled it in. Within less than a quarter mile it went from me being about 4-5 car lentghs behind, to me reeling him in, over taking him, pulling back in front of him by well out breaking him and turning left at the next roundabout!
First time ive really tested my new brakes properly. No drama at all, mr2 took it in its stride.

Ive been driving a 106 as a daily driver. Makes me remember what a car the mr2 can be.
Left me with a hell of a smile on my face, and makes me think `when this car works properly, isnt blowing head gasketts, not leaking coolant or any of the other million problem ive had, its an awesome car, and worth all the trouble ive had`.

nearly bought a gto once, stunning looking cars but apparently weak cranks.
was it the twin turbo version?

The TT with just a air filter can be good for 300bhp+ as i have seen with my mates car.

Once moving there is no way a standard tubby would keep up as they go on to 175mph+ easy... they are heavy beasts...

I had an encounter with one when I had my rev2 (~260bhp).

I launched and he just stayed there, I pulled over at the top of 3rd (when traffic allowed) and he then just shot off into the distance.

Met him a few months later at a local club car meet. Twin hybrids, forged internals, 450 @ wheels.

Not really, if it says "3000GT" on the back then it's the twin turbo for sure (UK version).

If it's just got "GTO" then it could be TT or NA

They look the business GTO's, especially the facelift model.

You can pick them up for peanuts these days too, not that I'd have one over the MR2.

An interesting alternative to Skyline/ Scooby/ Evo however...

I looked into these... yo better hold your breath and hope NOTHING ever goes wrong with them, as they are expensive in the extreme. They complex suspension, 4 wheel steering, electronics and computers everywhere. Not lightweight either, they do half the MPG as a MR2 tubby for the same performance.

Top speed? Well, just get the Celica diff and the MR2 will be geared for 175mph too. Should take around 350bhp to get it there, at which point you're in a faster car.

my friends tt gto just popped-looking at a few thousand to put right outch. nice cars though-but sooo damn heavy!

I owned one of these a, tt import, for around 3 years. They are expensive cars to repair and run. But also blindingly fast. Mine was limited to 155mph and i did it in 4th gear at 6k rpm, 7,250 redline. 0-60 was around 5.5sec as std with more grip than you could believe and the high speed acceleration was what i never tired of.
Mine munched the 5th gear and reverse synchros to just replace them and fit a paddle clutch i got a bill for £2600!!!
Would buy another in a flash though.

My mates got an import TT. Just had a rebuild before is got it. Its a J plate in great cond and cost him about 3k. So fast and sticks to the road like glue. Really good cars.

Must admit, before buying my 2 I had a look at a couple of GTOs as well. Once I realised how cheap the n/a is, it seemed like a lot of car for the money.

At the end of the day, though, I wanted the 2 as a runabout for the missus and I. A GTO, although nice, wasn't what I was looking for.

Or, to put it another way, what's the point in a car just as good as an MR2 but twice the size?

well i work for mitsubishi as a technician and ur right gto's or 300gt's are cheap as hell but.... i own an mr2. i will say no more

only mitsubishi i would buy is an evo and anyone who has a bad word to say about the evo's simply has never driven one.

I've got both a GTO Twin Turbo and a tuned Mr2 Turbo at the mo. The GTO is as others say great at higher speeds, and does power along effortlessly- a bit too effortless for me. But my MR2 feels miles faster on point to point acceleration. I refer to my GTO as my barge, as it is hugely heavy and you can tell when driving it hard. When i get back in my Mr2 after using the GTO, it feels like im in a fast Go-Kart. And yes they gulp down petrol almost as fast as you can put it in. And there is loads to go wrong and it normally does. Needless to say, i never drive the GTO now and it is sat with a flat battery on my driveway. I'm gonna sell it next week hopefully and get the Mr2 resprayed with the cash and maybe a bigger turbo kit. I'd never get another GTO, but another Mr2......... anytime.

I bought one of my mate who spent tons of money on it due to it not running right he kept taking it in to mitsubishi they changed this and that 3 times untill he thought ive got to get rid this . he was quoted so much for a new throtle body as they thought it was this was at fault cant remeber how much they were going to charge him for this as it was october time but it was a arm and a leg . well to cut a long story short i spent 80 quid and 2 weekends to find the fault which ended up being the ht leads now run,s sweat besides when cold needs idle control valve its a great car to drive recomend to any one who wants one just dont take it to main dealers and be prepered to scratch your head a lot when it goes wrong

GTO TT's are good for 13's on the quarter at around 100mph, similar to MR2 performance. Not astoundingly quick above that though when you compare it to say a Supra
