To answer should you do it yourself?

Have you worked much on cars before? Cambelts are a little risky if you dont know what your doing, altho on a toyota your not likely to break anything (if you timed it wrong) just wouldnt run.

The aw11 isnt the easiest car to do your first cambelt on, but yeah its definitely achievable if you are handy woth a spanner and work your way through the guide in a haynes manual or similar.

Well i've personally never changed a cambelt, but hopefully i'll have reinforcements in the form of my dad, who has done a fair amount, but never a MK1. I gather the only thing being more difficult would be the lack of space.

Now I need to find a cheap Toyota cambelt ......

Also is it worth replacing any other parts while im at it?

I believe its only 1 tensioner, so might be worth changing it. How many miles the car done?

I think fensport its about £55 quid for a belt and tensioner. Probably cheaper somewhere though

The car has done 63000 miles and the cambelt was last replaced at 44000 back in 1999.

Whats the interval for the cambelt? I ask as I always get mine changed at 30k or if no proof of a recent change upon purchase, asap.

According to the BGB its 60,000 miles.

supered the record actually stands at 38 mins lol ,usually its somewhere between 40 and 50 mins if the bottom pulley is awkward.

I suppose its because ive done a zillion of them previously.

Theres no need to change the tensioner pulley unless it sounds like a skateboard wheel when you inspect it.

I think you'd soon switch back to Toyotas after learning what Alfas can be like to work on! The cambelt change took 4.5 hours - and the guy knew what he was doing (he came recommended on the Alfa forums).

I still own an MR2 BTW - it's just on the wrong side of the world!

Bit like my Mazda V6 then! Took me 5 bloody hours to change the cambelt, altho it should have been about 4 except i had a seized belt tensioner (PAS pump) to attend to! damn cars
