[Mk2] [Turbo] E153 Tranny - Gearing options and their affects

Post by JekylandHyde »

I've been learning a bit about trannies and gearing, and I am still by far a newb, but I wanted to share some of the things that I have been looking at in the hopes that others might benefit from the research and math presented.

I'm just playing around with looking at the different gear options we have and different options for final drives. For this comparison, I looked at three gear sets and three final drives that are available for the E153.

The sets looked at are:
Stock MR2T set up, the Solara gear set and the Phoenix Power gear set.

Although I have no intention of ever dropping the huge $$$ (over $3K) for the PP gears, one of the board vendors on MR2OC.com is currently selling a few of the Phoenix Power final drives ... so there are options out there for us.

First, let's look at the affect of the combinations of gear sets and final drives on the top speed attainable in each gear.
I used Hyde for the purposes of plugging in the math, so a redline of 8500 rpms was used along with a 25.73" tall rear tire.

Next, let's look at each gear sets affect on acceleration.
For doing these calculations, I used one of the most comprehensive acceleration calculators that I could find. Although I do not put any weight in to specific numbers found, I am confident in the relationship between the numbers. For example: I do not think the math accurately portrays a real 1/4-mile potential, but does reflect which gear combination "should be" quicker & faster.

Again, I used Hyde's stats (weight, torque, tires, etc) for the calculations.

Comments & critique are welcome.

So in summary you're saying that a taller final driver in conjunction with the stock gearbox and your engine is faster over the 1/4 mile? Sound like the results mark edwards was getting earlier in the year.

Would it be difficult/much effort to run the calcs again with numbers representing a stock(ish) MR2, i.e exhaust boost/increase but standard redline etc?

I think you mean shorter final drive.
The PP 4.5 is shorter than the stock 4.285.

As for running the numbers again with a different car,
the realtionships will remain the same (which one is quicker/slower/faster).

The actual times and speeds will change, but they are not accurate anyway.

I could run the tire size/speeds for a stock size tire as those numbers are actual.

This speed per gear chart is made using a 93T stock-sized 225/50/15 tire @ the OEM redline of 7250 rpms:

But here more the stock power, speed, aero dynamics drag coefficient.

So say 167-169mph clock speed?

Sorry Harry, I am not sure what you are saying?!

I did notice that I typoed the red line used.
STock red line is 7250, not 6250. The math IS based on 7250 though.

Jekyll,

I have written an article for mr2only mag regarding tractive effort, to do this I constructed a speradsheet that takes into account all gear ratios, engine power curve, final drive, wheel diameter, vehicle weight etc and produces a theoretical acceleration graph. You can easily tweek the gear ratios and final drive to see the effect, calculate maximum speeds in each gear and of course max speed.

The only thing it doesnt have is a resistance graph, but that would be easy for someone like you to do and I could explain how.

I could send you the spreadsheet if you want and im sure Steveb wouldnt mind me sending you a copy of the article explaining it all, you interested?

Its a damn sight easier to understand by the way!

No worries, I just have an excel spreadsheet that calculates it all for you, which obviously isnt in the mag!

If you want it just say.

So the benefits of the Phoenix Power drive are quicker acceleration and a higher top speed?

Where are they being sold? :)

Seriously, do you think it would be able to make a noticable difference on your quarter mile time? Interested as I have a E153 in my MK1 twincharger...

Quicker accelerationd and LOWER top speeds.

If you want one, talk to Shaun here: http://store.mtbuggies.com/index.php
