[Mk2] [Turbo] Flywheel weights

Post by cantfindausername »

Ok, as I have a feeling that my clutch and flywheel kit is going to be taking a trip soon,

I'd like to gather some information on weights of the other lightweight flywheels that are on the market.

Anyone have some information on this? Or atleast know where I can get some??

Thanks,
Ant

prietty sure its alloy as you can get the replacement friction surfaces for them so it has to have a steel insert.

website says they do both steel and ally. Not sure they do them both for the MR though. Can't find weights though. I would have thought that people would be more forthcoming as its a potential selling point.

Well mine came off the car tonight... and f*ck me it weighs nothing!

Just got it on the scales... and its 6.0lbs exactely. Thats even lighter... ~2.7 kg!!!

Its being sent away tomorrow so it can be tested. They're going to simulate the operation and check it on a bench with a press.

Wonder what the outcome with be!

Perhaps the problem is that the flywheel is too light?

flywheel

Post by Martin F »

i was under the impression the standard flywheel weighs 22 pounds...
18 kg is a huge weight for a flywheel.
check out ebay . com, they are offering loads off deals for clutches and flywheels and give you weights for several different types..(im not recomending in buying though(american s**t))just gives you a rough idea whats out there

As stated in another post my enigne is in bits at the mo.

It is easy enough for me to take various parts in to work and weight them to within 0.1 of a gram. The info could then be posted as a sticky or a KB article.

If you think it's worthwhile let me know along with what you'd like details of,

Flywheel
Clutch
Crankshaft
Piston
Rods
Valve gear??

I think it would be very worth while to get the weights of the individual parts of the engine. In stock form this could give people something to work from to see where they're saving weight on a rebuild.

I wish I had this information cos I would definately have weighed all my new stuff.

Looking forward to seeing the information.

it's not realy the flywheels mass that matters, its it's moment of inertia. it's quite possible fot a heavier flywheel to have a lower MOI and hence spin up/down quicker. Removing mass from the outer edge of the flywheel has loads more effect than removing it from the central area, and the MOI of the clutch assembly is also significnt. Weighing the flywheel to the nearest gram is rather missing the point...

Obviously you can argue that any weight saving on the car is a good move, but you can effectively save about 40kg by only having a gallon or two in the tank....

Ok... lets start digging the net for MOI figures on the above flywheels.

Bet its not published for half of them though

Tilton - 99lb-in.sq

Will have to get some more figures to see if thats any good or not.
