Rusty mk1 rear arches - replacement panels?

Post by Dave Burke »

Hi folks,

My bro has bought my old mk1, and he's wanting to fix the rusty rear arches. Now I know you can get replacements from JDG panels, but they're a bit pricey. I vaguely remember Paul Woods mentioning that Datsun Cherry arches would fit, if you put them on the wrong sides? This was at Billing a couple of years ago, and my memory is somewhat impaired for some reason...

If that's the case, which year car is it that I need?

Cheers,

Dave

We just fit Cherry arches to mine. They don't go straight on... you'll have to feather them slightly and work them a bit, but the lip is pretty much spot on and they are very cheap.... I think we paid about 30 quid for both sides in total.

Do you know which year Cherry I need the arches off?

Allan - I thought I'd post here rather than PM'ing the guru, so that other mk1 owners can see it. :)

It's the Cherry model code "N12", 3 door version - Mine were £23 for the pair. Also an AE82 Toyota Corolla 3 door does the job.

They aren't quite spot on I think though - the lip is just right but the line the arches takes tapers back towards the back of the car. Of course that may be down to the person who fitted them, but as said above they need a bit of fiddling to get right

Somoene on ebay sells Mk1 arches, from the sill return right round to the bit below the bumper, for about £60 a side - I've absolutely no idea if they're any good, but may be worth lookign into.

No, these are brand new Cherry repair panels. Most motor factors should be able to get them. I wouldn't bother with second hand when you're already fighting the dreaded tinworm!

That said, I also have seen the mk1 panels on ebay as described above... they look the business, but I've no idea about the quality or fit.
