MR2 Trackday - Donington Park - Sunday 18th March

Post by Icsunonove »

Track Day @ Donington Park organized by the MR2 Driver’s Club in association with BookaTrack.com Ltd

Sunday 18 March 2007

In order to have only MR2s on the track, the event have been open to members of the MR2 Roadster Owners’ Club, the International MR2 Owners’ Club (UK) and the MR2 Mk1 Club, with 15 places allocated to each club (60 cars in total).

Booking are on first come first serve basis, SO BOOK EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT.
To book visit www.bookatrack.com and select Donington Park on 18 march 2007.
When booking chose the option “Open Pit Lane (IMOC)”.

Donington is an excellent circuit both for trackday newbies and the more experienced track dayers.

Format
It will be an Open Pit Lane format. This means that you can come and go on track as you wish. However there is a circuit limit of 30 cars. So that means as long as this maximum isn’t exceeded you are free to come and go as you please. There may be a small queue early in the morning or straight after lunch, but generally you are unlikely to be queuing.

Noise limits:

98dB Drive-By. Measured from track-side.
100dB Static. 0.5m and 45° from exhaust at ¾ maximum RPM.
Static tests are only on vehicles failing the drive-by noise limit.

This is very strictly enforced. If you know your car is very near to these limits I really wouldn’t bother risking it.

2nd drivers/passengers, spectators
2nd drivers are free so no extra cost. If you have more than one extra driver then there is a cost of £50. Passengers are free as are spectators. So even if you are not driving but fancy coming down to watch, bring a helmet, sign on and you can bag some passenger rides for free.

Helmets:
A crash helmet must be worn. If you don't own one you can hire one from BookaTrack (BaT) for £10. It is advisory to book this when you book up for the day as that way you are ensured to get one should the demand become high.
If you borrow one then really it should conform to at least motorbike or motorsport requirements.

Instruction:
Intruction will be available from the Book-a-Track instructor. Cost is £20 for 20mins. Again you can book this when you book up for the day or you can pay on the day. Obviously preferential times are given to those who book him first. If you are a trackday virgin I would recommend booking for one session.

Tyres:
There will be a full tyre fitting service at Donington. If you know you will need tyres by the end of the day you need to pre-order them online through BaT. Tyre wear isn’t too bad at Donington though…..

Slicks:
No slicks allowed unless you have a rollcage fitted, for obvious reasons i hope.

Mechanical Assistance:
Well there will be a lot of people there who know their stuff when it comes to MR2s so you should be okay I would hope! But if anything does need some more serious tools Book-a-Track have an engineer on site who can help (at a charge)

If you have any further questions please post them in this topic

We're not a member of any MR2 club yet...

Any chance we can guarantee a sunny mild dry day, for an extra £10? ;)

Simon, don't shoot the messenger. That's the price, take it or leave it.

And to be honest I have decided that I don't want to do any more trackdays that are sessioned. I really hate the sessioned format!

Count me in, i'll pay in the new year.

Sick to death of sessioned days. They're absolute rubbish, especially around donny where people seem to be drawn to the gravel.

Try going in a faster group then Jon, you dont get held up as much and theres not as many incidents usually.

Plus you do your fair share of red flagging!

Actually the faster group last sunday was the most red flagged session of the day.

I've caused 2 reds in my life time. Once my own fault, the other to avoid that mx5 spinning. I wouldn't class that as a fair share just yet considering the amount of days i've done. Give me more time.

How many days have you done this year? Didn't you spin 3 times last sunday?

5 days this year i think. I span twice on my own when pushing on a bit too hard but they were half spins and kept on the black stuff.

True - one of the red flags was for Rowland's spin!

I think I'm correct in saying my (novice) group had no red flags all day??!! Not bad - guess we just weren't going fast enough.

Speaking with the Marshall in the safety car during my tuition, he mentioned he was dishing out quite a few b0ll0ckings to various drivers throughout the day for reckless driving, most of which were in the top group.

I Read That As: Poor briefing.

You've got people timing etc... no wonder you get people in the kitty litter. Gravel is the achilles heel at Donny.

To be fair the gravel at redgate is a pain, not been in it myself but it seems whatever car ends up in there is beached (so the session is flagged) and you can't get out, and your always going to get people going off at the end of a big straight, plus its quite a tricky corner.

I don't think the briefings are particularly poor tbh, but the last couple of times ive been there there has been an awful lot of cars going off, and not just fast ones, clio diesels and tat like that too, how you crash one of those i'll never know!

Pfttt...I was just a passenger on that one, I never span all day!
The briefing was a little relaxed in comparison to a typical, well detailed, firm but fair bookatrack briefing. There was definitely no mention of timing from the Trakzone guy.
One thing that annoyed me early on was a 200zx blatantly drifting around every corner in front of me on the racing line.
Not only was he holding me up with his showboating antics, but it was a ‘trackday’ not a ‘driftday’.
Johnny 5 from Bookatrack would have had his pants down on a bookatrack day I bet!!

I got told off for drifting Toni's driftcar at Donny when i was doing passenger laps. To be fair though i let people past rather than hold them up and make them watch my antics.

That guy was pretty good at drifting though :)

I had the second round of briefing, me and 4 newbies. It was rubbish and they looked more confused going out than they did going in.

The gravel at redgate is a pig, I realised i had to go in to miss the mx5 so i scrubbed as much speed off, found 2nd, got off the brakes, got the car straight and got on the gas very very slightly. I only went in a cars depth and /almost/ managed to drive out, but it beached me just before my front wheels hit solid ground.
