[Mk2] [Generic] Does your car whine more than your Mrs?

My car has a very loud whine from the engine. Can't hear it particularly from inside, just outside.

I have heard the Honda CTR make a similar whine, and have heard the '2 does do this a bit, but how much should it be?? Had a service and all that, and runs fine, just sounds a bit wierd.

Std N/a '97 except for a K&N :-k

Check the air con idler pulley. It starts like that and gets louder and louder (a bit like a woman).

Mine also whines at about 1k - 2k revs (or at least after that the noise is drowned out), especially when its cold.

It sounds a bit like a whistle and has been like that since I've had it.

There's not a lot in it to be honest.

When you first turn on the igntion, there's the power steernig pump getting up to pressure from the front.

After starting (with the clutch depressed), lifting up the clutch in neutral reveals another noise, which I guess is tired gearbox bearings.

The fuel pump is also pretty close to the drivers seat too, so I think I can hear this too.

And once I get above 50mph the t-bar and window whistling kicks in.

All drowned out by my s/s exhaust and decat when on the throttle of course.

Basically, if you want a quiet car, buy a Lexus or Citroen C6.
