[Mk2] [Turbo] external wastegate hoses ?

Post by varmint »

hi all,

just looking for a bit of advice really,

i have an external wastegate fitted and am a little unsure of the fitting of the two hoses that connect to it.
am i right in thinking that the top port on the wastegate goes to turbo compressor housing ?
as for the lower connection on the wastegate, does it go to the manifold ?

they are both connected differently to above at the moment but the car starts and runs, but idles a little uneven.

appreciate anyones advice on this,

thanks to all in advance

Ok a little concerned at what your doing here, the way you have described when you boost the wastegate will stay shut.

You need to connect the bottom of the wastegate to the turbo compressor housing and the top should have nothing connected, vented to atmosphere.

This is for boosting at the wastegate springs set level, to boost higher you can use a manual boost controller on the line connecting to the bottom still leaving the top vented.

If you have a electronic boost controller it needs to be set to external wastegate setting and connected to the top port.

hi graham,

i think i see,

there was an mbc fitted, which i took off, couple of weeks went by and i forgot where the hoses reconnected to....whoops

ive now fitted the profec ebc, glad i asked, and even gladder for your advice.
the ebc is set to external wastegate, and i will check to see its connected to the top port,
if this is the case, then could you confirm the route of the bottom port on the wastegate,
many thanks

The middle port need's to be connected to the compressor housing and the top to a boost controller of some sort, you need the top connected because this open's the wastegate using charged air, the middle connection stabilizes the diaphragm inside the wastegate you can run with out it connected but can cause boost problem's. If you want to run spring pressure just connect both pipe's to the turbo housing for a temporary measure. Just my 2p's worth

Hey Steve

ok this is the way to do it for an EBC.

hose from the turbo compressor to a T piece. then a piece of pipe from the T to the bottom port of the wastegate. This gives the wastegate a feed to push open the valve to control the boost at the set rating.

now you have an ebd so take another hose from the last outlet on the T and take that to the "IN" on your EBC's solenoid, then a hose from the "OUT" of the solenoid to the top port on the wastegate.

remember to block up that one from the manifold whatever the hell that was for lol.

This way, the EBC just adds boost pressure to the top of the wastegate to prevent it from opening, then when the target boost level is reached it removes the boosted air and the bottom port pressure is higher than the top and it pops the valve open!

Good luck

If you connect both ports to the compressor housing it will never open and will just boost right up. There will be no pressure differential on the diaphram.

The top port is always left vented in a stock setup.
