[Mk2] [Generic] Cuts in Front Tyre - cause?

Post by JeffD »

Hi folks

Had what I thought was a slow puncture for the last month but when I took it to Kwik-fit yesterday they said the tyre had cuts in the inside edge in a number of places (see below).

I cant see anything fouling the wheel on the car (they are 16" tyres). The chap at Kwik-fit suggested that it might be splits in the tyre wall because they are 'rubbish tyres' - Nankang or whatever but I find that hard to believe. The tires have been on the car for some time with no problem until recently and its just the passenger side front. I dont remember running over anything either.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Regards Jeff

Dunno, scraped against kerbs? (as it's only front passenger side)

Whatever you do, it looks like they need replacing anyway because:
1. The tread looks barely legal in those pics.
2. The geezer at Kwik-Fit was right, Nankang are rubbish tyres.

*edit* not kerbs then if it's the inside edge :?

Dont think it was a scrape as it'son the inside. The tyre has already been replaced with an Eagle F1 which cost me £100.

Just worried about recking my new tyre...

it looks like that tyres a wanli ? or something along the lines of that, not sure how its spelt.
I am sorry but i hate fittin these tyers as these are the only tyres that i usally get back within one month and they crack on the side wall everywhere.
These tyre's are very cheap and the sidewall is too soft for a low profile tyre.
my advice, never fit these. cheapest budget you should go for is a nexen usally about £45. Dont go any cheaper than this as wanli's are very cheap and this will just keep happening,

hope this helps, cheers.

I think they were Nankang. Never mind you live and learn! :-)

sadly not just cheap tyres, i had 2 goodyear eagle f1's that split on the inside tyrewall like yours (apparently there was a known issue), although they're still the only tyres i put on.

could also be speed humps (any excuse to kick off at the council  ), continual underinflation of tyre? or blade wielding chavs with a penchant for crawling underneath cars.

would defo move away from nankangs though, whatever the cause. :thumleft:

Just a word of advice: I'd be very careful if you've only replaced one tyre with an F1 - the handling of the car will quite likely be unpredictable with different rubber on different wheels, especially at this time of year on the wet roads.

After reading all replies I reckon I have had a slow puncture which has caused the tyre to defalte without me noticing so I carried on running the tyre at low pressure which has then split the tyre. As a gues?...
