[Mk2] [Turbo] upgrading oil pump...

Post by RyanRs »

if i was to upgrade the oil pump for an uprated one with better flow, would this be an engine out job? or is it possable to do it with engine in??

reason i ask is i want to upgrade the oil pump, my engine is currently in pieces, but it puts me past my budget at moment & isnt entirely nesecarry to have at the moment... obv to replace while the engine is out is the best option.. and if the engine has to be out, then ill do it , and have to sacrifice geting my samco hoses or something else... but if its not that hard of a job to do with the engine in, id rather do it later...

anyone know?

Mate I'd rather replace a samco hose later on than a oil pump!

Oil Pump is easily a full days work - sump off and cambelt off...

What upgraded pump are you looking at though?

Only Toga do a high flow pump for the 3sgte (or whatever else the pump will fit)

Its pretty pointless unless your revving over like 8500rpm, which id never do anyway. The stock pump is well capable. I have the relief valve shimmed to give slightly higher pressure at warm idle as im not keen on the stock output.

Just fit a shim between 1.0mm and 1.5mm between the valve and the cir clip,

humm.. i had a look for that circlip, but i couldnt find the one you mean.. the only one on the oil relief valve is the one inside the bolt -with the 20mm or so head on it... you are talking about the oil cooler relief valve arent you?

could you show me the part on the EPC mabe..

also, i have now cleaned out the oil pump... but the actual pump internals, the star bit and the circle part that rotates, that the star fits into.. is there any perticular way this circle piece is fitted -ie does it have a front and back to it? i see there is what looks like an arrow engraved on it, but cannot see what relevance it has??

thanx

AFAIK the uprated pumps are for rev1 and 2 cos the yanks dont get the rev 3 engine. I looked for one a while back so make sure its a rev 3 if you order one. The prv that people are talking of shimming is the one on the sump on a rev 3 as you suspect (22mm) but i dont think its worth it personally. More flow may be an advantage but not more pressure. If you want more pressure use a 60weight oil (although oilman prob wouldnt recommend it)

Chris K does the rev 1 & 2 uprated pumps but not for 3 onwards. I actually spoke chris about this and he said the rev 3 pumps were good std - the only thing he recommended was to shim it - like Graeme explained.

Sorry I forgot this was a rev 3 application.

You dont need to shim the rev 3 pump, it will be fine standard.

The relief valve is the one inside the oil pump itself not in the oil cooler.
