[Mk2] [Turbo] please check this cam timing and lobe location

Post by cantfindausername »

Ok, we've tried everything else, and now are looking at cam timing.

We think that I've set the cams up on the wrong side of the lobe.

When the crank is at 10degrees BTDC, the rotor arm is on No.3.

Can someone confirm that this is feasible, and that the position of these lobes is incorrect.

After a diagnosis on both intake and exhaust lobe locations please.

Thanks,
Ant

here's the pics...

At 10 degrees BTDC the rotor should be pointing to 1 or 4 shouldnt it?

Its well out. We've looked in the BGB and it says the no.1 cam lobes should be pointing out, mine are both in :(

Thats the surprising thing... nothing has touched. It was either a stroke of dumb luck that I got them that way out, or they are still non interference setup [-o<

ok engine is not non interference as we've managed to lock the intake cam when moving it. So I'm one LUCKY f*cker that nothing happened when we tried to start it!! :pale:

its way out matey, recheck the dialing procedures! i have had dialing figures from hks or call it discription of angles that simply didnt add up, look for a overlap period where both sides are open for 50 ish degress of crank rotation, then you will know you are closer.

At the moment we've made sure the pulleys are at TDC markings and lined them up with the TDC marks on the timing belt back cover.

make sure that the cams are in the timing positions , when the engine is at tdc , only on the compression stroke for no1 piston , if the crank is 360 degrees out the timing marks will all line up , but the cams will be set to no2 and 3 tdc and not no1 and 4 like they should be

This nearly right and a little wrong i'm afraid. Your pic shows the cams in the postion of No4 on compression not No1. The crank turns twice for each turn of the cams so if you turn the crank one full rev the cams will turn half a turn.

From the position youve got in the pic turn the crank one FULL turn then the cams will point outwards when you set the crank at tdc (or 10 before will look close). The rotor should then point to No1 in the cap- be carefull to look closely at the postion of thr rotor cos its easy to mistake 1 for 3 in the layout.
Hope this helps

The cams were timed on the wrong side of the lobe. This is confirmed!

We started the engine on sunday after resetting the cam timing.
