Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
I'm thinking about de-catting my car mmmmmmmmmmm (NA)
I've already got a performance exhaust and behind the silencers is a straight pipe that seems to be the cat! I've seen pics of de-cat pipes but im sure these are different because they are for the 3sgte.
So what do i do! is there only the pipe i described above to replace? are there more?
what are the gains? 10 hp reasonable or 5hp
Will i notice?
Will i get away with it at mot? I'm sure I will though its a L reg import
Thank for any help

They are.

De-cat pipes replace the cat!

you will get a slight increase in bhp and exhaust will be louder.

up to August 92 cars didn't need cats, after this they were an MOT requirement although turbos up to 1995 get away without it

As it is equipvalent to the Uk GTi model, and it was registered after 1992 you'll need to pass a cat test.
You may be able to do with with the cat removed, but you'll have to expect to fit it again for the MOT and remove it afterwards .. for rolling road tuning purposes only, of course
mines never had a cat so cant say about noticing the diffrence, but i never see the point in people spending money on a 'performance' exhaust which is trying to make the air flow more efficiant when you still have what is in effect a plug in the middle of it. you may as well just go to powerflow as your just increasing the sound level. if your buying an aftermarket exhaust for figures then u deff dont want to have a cat on and idealy you would want to uprate the manifold and downpipe. a straight thru system with no restrictions is the way to go for bhp! but having a cat on a pefromance exhaust is a little pointless IMO!
so get rid of it!!!
Fair point. ther.
I was thinking about poping to powerflow tommor day, get an idea of price,
What do you reckon the will charge for approx 30" of straight pipe, with a couple of brackets and bolts?
I'm not overly bothered about bhp as it's an na and I cant be ar$ed to spend silly money, just buy a turbo instead sometime mid year.
More noise is good though, mine has a jasma certificate with it so it's mellow sounding, a bit more grunt would be nice to wake the neighbours.
Hey,
They shouldnt charge you more than 60 for something like that, that should include labour and VAT. like you said all u need is some straight pipe with flanges either end. and i agree louder is better! as long as it has a note to it, rather than the sound of air blowing like ur in a nova with a hole in the back box
mine is suppodedly a 'racing use only' Apexi, but i think thats just because the noise level is illegal in japan and america!

ooo just noticed on your profile you have a Fujitsubo exhaust system, they actually sell an uprated manifold which includes the flexi pipe for the N/A which would complete your system, if you did want to look into it i could trace back through my favourites for you and let u kno the site, it costs around 600 quid but you would sound amazing and no one would dare touch you! not to mention a nice little bhp increase!!

I got the cat taken out when i had a new exhaust fitted and i reckon the car revs more freely now - could be a combination of the new exhaust and cat though? I'd give it a go!
