JDG panels

I'm quite annoyed! I bought the whole set of rear arch panels off JDG, and the body shop I took them to (very recommended) has told me the panels are crap, they had to spend an extra day cutting and reshaping them to fit. So is it the body shop who are useless or the excessively expensive panels?! grrrrrrr.

unfortunately you cannot get exact replacements unless you buy the complete rear quarter as far as i know.

My bodyshop said the same - it took him ages to get them to fit. Didn't charge me any more than he quoted though

Well excess was cut off by me and this was my first propper bodyshop work. only thing i would of liked is the curved bit inside the door but this was built, and inside the rear sill panel. these had to be built.

I did not replace the actual arch though. they were not too bad

Generally i was impressed that a bloke in the UK is knocking these up.

Were the arches on Terry's Red mk1a (that he bought from you) from JDG? Its the only car other than mine that i know has had the arches done...

Wow - excellent first job =D> I had a set fitted (without any probs I might add ) over 4 yrs ago and still looking good

IMO many bodyshops just don't have a sufficient skill level to fit them well, having seen a number of mk1's repaired using JDG panel's, complete with snotty welds et al - or else they just can't be bothered to take their time with them, as they were a much needed answer to owners club prayers before the price of complete rear wings via Mr T had fallen.

I beleive that you can buy the complete rear quarter from Toyota, but you are unable to buy the inner arch to go with it.
I have one side complete rear quarter to repair one of my Mk1s, and I was going to use the JDG panels for the other side, I might rethink now...

How much are the rear wings now, i paid around £260 a side a couple of years ago as i didnt know about the jdg panels at the time is that the cheap price or expensive?

Yeah I have had mot weld ups done before, a lot of the time the garage is getting on with it and cutting corners for cost and cos they are realistic it will get scrapped eventually, owners often care more and take their time to do it their best a lot of the time. There will be some good garages/body shops though obviously.

Cheers HT I do ceramics and similar craft/art stuff so it was ok but My dad did the actual welds cos thats summat i need to get into!

My next brave plan is to take the skirts off! ;D

Ollie - you have always been able to buy the rear quater panel from toyota, only now though has the price come close to being considered feasible for restoring a mk1 with. When I enquired at a toyota dealership/ authorised repair centre nearly 5 years ago Mr T wanted £1k for the rear quarter panel and a further £1k to fit it (a massive undertaking), oh that was per side - hence like many others JDG panels were a godsend for my £500 basketcase mk1 at the time But most importantly they have kept many mk1's on the road both here and abroad, which is not bad for a small family run concern! I'd recommend them anytime, however like any thing thats hand made there can be discrepencies in fit etc, I did with one side, as they set two right hand side arches - however it was sorted very quickly! Use them with confidence many have before

I had heard that they ahve come down in price - possible as toyota sheds it stock of car ong out of production. £260 sounds great as even if you don't use the whole panel you have nearly all the problem areas in one piece!! I think JDG charge £310 still for a full set, but its best to check on the mk1 club website. HTH

Kev (crazylegs) had trouble with his rear arch restoration recently as Toyota claimed they could source the inner arches as well, but they have been discontinued.

HT, your final result looks very tidy. I will have a think, I have until the spring to decide either way

Yes they were. A complete set both sides.

ollie i have a pair of jdg arches you can have a look at if you want. i bought them as they were going to be used as the inner lip of the inner arches. my green over gold car however had good inners so these were never needed. i must admit they look ok but would agree they are over priced as they are a preessed part. the rear corners however i think are under priced as there is much more work involved. i recently inquired from a restorer /panel beater (the english wheel sort) how much one would be and as a favour he quoted £120 ! he said it was 12 - 14 hours labour to make one by hand from scratch. he did however say they would be a perfect match.perfect with a large capital P.
the rear quarters can be got for around £550 the pair if you go to the right dealership.

I got new inner arches for both sides of mine from Toyota in Warrington, they were about £160 each side
