[Mk2] [Generic] Drivers Door lock - Won't open

Post by excalibur1814 »

Before I go outside and beat the crap out of my car, just thought I would ask the wise people for thoughts etc. (Had a quick search for this topic but found nothing of 45 referenced pages.)

Put the key in the door, lock the door, fine. Smooth as a salesperson after a bonus.

Opening the door is a tad harder... Quite a bit of resistance and it might snap the (only) key.

It did it earlier today and when I came back to the thing after six minutes, it opened just fine. Never done this before. Just been on E-bay and no-one is sellinga door lock. Dammit.

Just been outside now and it unlocks fine. lift the handle and it feels 'heavy'.

Fantastic. Gonna have to take the door card off again and try to look past the mass of metal. Ho-hum

Don't know if its any help :-k but has the door dropped at all?

Just thinking it may not be sitting right when you lock it?

If not i'm of no use whatsoever!

Hello

Post by excalibur1814 »

Don't think so. I bet if I go outside again in three minutes or so it will open straight away. It's an inconsistant problem that makes no sense and my hunch is that it's 'not' to do with the lock itself. (But I've been wrong before. Women seem to remind me of that fact)

I've even tried saying nice tthings to it!!

hi,try spraying wd40 in the lock mechanism on the side of your door, also in where the key goes,if you haven't got the flexi tube to fit on the spray can spray some on your key,and work the key in the lock repeat this a few times, also spray the handle mechanism and operate that untill it frees off.hope this helps.paul.

Thanks all...

I'll spray everything I see as I've sprayed the lock but not the other parts.

Fixed.

Pull the door handle up as much as possible with a slight 'grrr' motion, hold there, let go and the lock unlocks straight away.

Phew.

Don't know if it is too late, but I had this problem a while back. Turned out that I had knocked the surround for the door handle so it was rubbing and catching the unlock switch.

Door that won't unlock and inertia lock belts that don't....inertia lock...

Post by Noisyhooligan »

8) I have a problem with my drivers-side door in that it won't unlock with either central locking or with the key. Luckily, I had a mis-spent youth and am pretty adept with a coat-hangar and also watched The Dukes of Hazzard and so can still get into and out of the car but it is getting to be a bit of a drag and can't face stripping the door down to replace the lock...

Both my inertia-reel seat belts do not lock despite looking in a reasonable state, interestingly, I have two mates with identical cars, 1991 non-turbo, and their inertia reels do not lock either, has anyone got any experience with these things? It is detracting from my fun a little to know that the only thing that will prevent me from becoming a human missile if/when I willy-up is not going to help me...
