[Mk2] [Turbo] Toyota Forlife

Post by mr2nut123 »

Ive been told Toyotas were spefically designed to use forlife in the engine by a guy from a turbo centre, he said with water and antifreeze i will be creating hotspots in the engine and eventually it will blow.

He also said that because im running my car on 98 Optimax and not 100ron like in Japan, it wont be doing the car any good either.... What you reckon guys?

Optimax doesn't exist so you've got no problems there

Yes our fuel is cr4p in comparison to Japan, however....V power you are refferring to is 99 RON so hardly any differency between that and 100 RON. Stick with V-power or any other super unleaded and you will be fine.

Yes Toyota specify forlife coolant in their engines, but that is mainly due to the fact that they sell it and can make money from it. Forlife red pre mixed is the same as any other long life antifeeeze from most motor factors. Red usually signifies longlife coolant...

Just check the 'ingrediants' between toyota forlife and most other red longlife coolants and they will be quite similar... Never mix different 'types' of coolant though as it is likely to make a nice sludge...

I say don't use that guy for advice :D

How Toyota mechs can claim that you must only use red long life coolant when the Factory service manuals call for "good brand ethlyene glycol coolant" is beyond me.

Just to clarify, you can use any glycol ethylene based coolant, if you buy it in full concentration, you will need to dilute it 50% coolant, 50% water. It can be red or blue IIRC, just check it is glycol ethylene base.

Toyota Forlife comes premixed and costs a fair bit more, when half of it is just water!!

If in doubt get Forlife as you don't want to make a mistake!

Any garage will have a tester to tell you to what temperatures your car is protected given the current strength of coolant. Forlife is a toyota cash machine

Re fuelling, 99 RON is as good as you'll get from our pumps, and the knock sensor will probably be retarding your timing fractionally from what it would be if you were on 100-102RON. Its not a problem though no.

If you use 97 or heaven forbid 95 RON on a tubby, you'll be retarding the timing and won't do your motor any good in the long run... unless of course you get a standalone ECU mapped to run these lower RON fuels, but why would you want to do that?
