rev3 turbo, really nasty metallic rattle when reving the car out of gear and also present when driving along in gear - most noticeable off load.

Checked almost everything for loosness ! Took all heatshields off, refitted. Removed all drivebelts not this. Garage diagnosed valve clearance's so they were done but not the cause. Did big end bearing check not this. Checked turbo play, fine.

Getting hacked off with this noise , and i know before people have found it was the driveshaft bearing - but i had previously checked the bearing bolt for tightness.

I thought lets just put a bit of load on the driveshaft, so put a jack undeneath AND the noise completely dissapeared.

So i dont know if anyone has any idea's on how to rectify this, is it a new bearing req'd - or just a re-torque of the bolt ( would be surprised this is already bloomin tight ! ) ? any idea's ?

yes, it could well be the clutch release bearing - but think for the mo will persevere with the driveshaft bearing , since the fact the jack underneath stopped the noise tends to point to this bearing.

Just wondering really anyone who has replaced / or adjusted this driveshaft bearing what their experiences of doing it was.

When you say "reving the car out of gear" do you mean when the car is not in motion? Also when moving and off load at what sort of speed and/or engine revs does this noise occur?

reving out of gear, ok yes - the car is stationary, and if you snap open the throttle to about 2.5K, the noise is most noticeable then.

When moving along its only noticeable off load, and slow speed - say <25mph .

Do you have/had a similiar problem ?

Does sound an awful lot like your clutch throw out bearing mate, its very common after all... might be worth getting a mechanic to listen to it.

Leeroy I didnt realise the clutch bearing was a common problem, it sounds as though thats worth looking at then. Thanks for that, cheers Nick

Well mine has the same symptoms and I diagnosed it as this, and was confirmed by a garage, so could well be the culprit.

It only sounds when either in neutral, or with the clutch depressed. And this can be when stationary or when in motion.

If it was driveshaft related would it not sound all the time, i.e. when under load too?

I don't know the answer, just trying to bounce a few suggestions around

Yep. Near enough indentical symptoms. It was driving me insane 'cos I couldn't work out what it was and it sounded like expensive bad news!! Eventually tracked it down to the engine cover stay which had loosened at the hinge end.

I couldn't believe how something that minor could make so much noise

Not saying your problem isn't the clutch bearing - it may well be - but it just might be something far less trouble and expense to put right

99% will be the long drive shaft support bearing loose. try tigtning the inch bolt best way to check is to have it in the air

get a mate to rev it so u can hear it, as it is making the noise, grab hold of the drive shaft and "hang off it" that should stop the noise, if it does theres ya problem

Absolutely right !

Fiited a new bolt TOYOTA 90119 - 10461



For anyone with such a rattle, it may be worth trying for the miniscule cost of this bolt. ( tightening had no effect )
