Detonation or knock occurs after spark ignition.It happens because as the flame front progresses, the heat and pressure actually reform some of the molecules to a form that is easier to ignite, so they ignite causing multiple flame front.

You make the most power right on the verge of knock- hence having acceptable
knock levels
