I got taken out in a lotus Carlton a few years ago , standard uk spec TT Supra a bit quicker up to about 60/70 after that forget it.
The Carlton's top end acceleration is stunning the guy driving put his foot down at 80 and it takes off and pushes you back in the seat , next thing your doing 160.
Having said that I would still rather have my MR2 or a Supra

There's a black one knocking around in Coventry, actually. See it quite a bit. As amazing as it might be it's still, y'know, a saloon...

Reports when they were new were they would do 0 - 60 - 0 in 8.5 seconds.

Read that again. That's zero to 60 and back to zero again in 8.5 seconds.

Try it...

As far as I know they only came in one colour... that dark green.

Amazing cars, probably one of my favourites ever made, I have a framed picture on my wall (sad I know!)

The story goes that the Police were issued with The Carlton GSI when they were first made, then shortly after Lotus produced their version of the carlton which was obviosuly a lot faster. The Police were annoyed and tried to ban them for being too fast.

I always see the same one each year at Harpenden and Croxley Green classic car shows. A very rare beast. And a beast in its own right, not to be compared to anything else IMO, especially not a MR2... completley different kettles of fishys

They've always got a stand at the Enfield Pageant

I quote from a random link:
"Lotus basically took the Carlton, added a rear boot spoiler, air intakes on the bonnet, Lotus badges, and souped up the engine. It turned the 3.0 inline-6 into a monster twin turbocharged 3.6 liter inline-6 making 377 hp at 5,200 rpm. The car came in only one colour; Imperial Green - a colour which looked like black except under very bright lights.

General Motors originally had a sales target of 1,100 units, but only managed 950 (320 Vauxhalls and 630 Opels). This was due to the early 1990s recession, not many could afford a £48,000 car"

Wow..the Lotus Carlton... \:D/

I'll never forget in the early 90's, I was driving up the A24 one Sunday morning, and at the end of a mile-or-so-long stretch of (almost deserted) road as I approached a roundabout braking from 70-ish, I happened to glance in my mirror and saw a car in the distance....

I literally only had time to change down a gear before this Carlton passed me VERY rapidly: he MUST have been flat out to cover that ground in that short space of time..... :D

I'll always remember that descreet yellow badge on the back.... 8)

Along with the Escort Cossie, one of the 90's legends.....
