Mr Lover - Updated 17/11/06

Post by MR2lover »

I bought my mr2 back in July 2004 when I was 18. The mr2 then was UK N/A and was cheap to insure due to being a UK car not import. I always wanted a sports car and I felt the mr2 met the bill on all levels. The Stylish lines of the car just caught my eye and the mid engine design just put the icing on the cake.
Here is it the day I got it, so proud

As I just finished college when I got my mr2 I had some time to work on it and decided to put a customised body kit on it and add some stylist 18” wheels. This is when I found the Bomex front end which had to have holes fibre glassed over and veilside for the rest of kit also added a nice autopista spoiler to keep the lines smooth. The car was then resprayed in Alfa Nuvola blue. However the paint job was not as good as I had hoped it would be. So later in the year I decide to get some fancy Lambo doors and get it resprayed again properly at a Local garage. The finish was 10 times better. i also addes a nos kit but found this just wasn't as good as exspected

On the 1st May, I turned nineteen and decided to take the engine power to another level. This involved taking my car to Leeds where a 2litre 16valve was removed, and in it's place, a 1992 twin entry turbo lump engine. The engine came equipped with a blitz dump valve and an hks exhaust and filter which was a bonus, adding to the ever growing power of my engine. The nos was taken out

The couple of month I focused on many custom bits I have made for car including flush lights, custom carputer, custom engine Louvre.

My car remained this way for the duration of about four months until the terrible occasion in late July when my cambelt was sheared off by a miss placed bolt in the cam cover  .

My car was transported to the garage where the conversion was taken place to be fixed, but after a period of time, I decided that they were not as reliable as had first thought and so took my car elsewhere. This is where 3S Servicing came to my rescue. They rebuilt my engine for me, but not back to its original state. It was customised and forged to enable it to take extreme power levels.

Image

Along came my banzai feature at Silverstone this was great for the car as it got a lot of attention from companies which gave me a few sponsorship deals. One of these was with Turbo Technics who supplied me with a one off ct26. \:D/

With an engine like this, I had to treat myself to few bits. See my spec below.

Departure pro 2 exhaust
ST205 chargecooler,
Turbo Technics CT26 stage 1.5 Hybrid, Custom from TT
Ross Forged Pistons with rings
Cosmetic 1.2mm metal Head gasket
Port and polished Head
ARP head bolts
AP Engineering Apexi Powerfc
Sard 800cc Injectors
Sard Fuel Pressure regulator
Custom Dual feed fuel Rail
Braided fuel lines everywhere.
GM MAT sensor
MAP sensor Conversion
Hyper SR Down pipe
Davis craig water pump for chargecooler
Walbro Fuel Pump
Rev3 cams
Polished crank
Spal Fan,
Greddy Profec B Spec II boost controller
Blitz dump valve,
Samco hoses,
Trd ignition lead,
2 x Gilera Pre Rads for Chargecooler
RPS clutch

I then had to have the engine management side of the engine sorted, so went for a powerfc. In order to fit this to a rev2 3sgte I had to convert my ecu setup into a rev3. This involved fitting a Manifold air temp sensor, rev3 map sensor, rev3 ignitor, Rev3 injectors and a Ait sensor. I did a guide how to do this which is found here.

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... 2+rev3+ecu

Tracking these parts was hard but I aspect even harder now due to many more doing it. I then started the conversion but was offered a lovely rare ap engineering ecu for rev2 which I have always wanted to see the extra controls for rev2 (tvis Etc). This still needs basically all the rev3 ecu setup parts except the ignitor and rev3 injectors. But I kept my rev3 injectors. I then travelled to Northampton to zen performance where the great pavlo mapped my ecu. The car then turned into a different machine so much smoother and very responsive. The only down side is my turbo maxed out my 540cc injectors at 1.1 bar and I wanted to run around 1.6 bar.

A month or so later I went back to zen with an uprated fuel pressure reg to see if the problem was with my fuel pressure but that was fine and managed to grab alittle more fuel but no where near enough. So the next step was bigger injectors, I went for some sard 800cc which I got from japan.

I then came into another problem. The rev1 and 2 fuel rails have a pressure drop across the rail and basically if I was to fit some 800cc into the rail it would be very risky so off I went and got another fuel rail which I had bored and made up a custom dual feed fuel input for to lose this pressure drop.

Back to zen, cranked up the boost and holy xxxx batman  I was flying. During the mapping it started to rain and even in 4th gear it was spinning up. So we had to back off and wait for a dry spell luckily one came and we were off again. The engine just loved more ignition advanced. I am now have the car dyno’d on the 12th which is today and waiting to see the results.

I also have another turbo coming this week also which I am going to be trying out for a company. This ones a little bigger   . So will be going back for more mapping and then I will then have this dyno’d on the 9th of July at a rolling road event I am organising.

The car has also been resprayed again now to silver with black roof to create a more evil look

Here is pic of engine and car now

So it's not hinged? I would love to see more pictures of how you have done this... how it's attached, etc.

thought these engines were non-interference ?

ie when the cambelt snaps no damge is done.
