If you are looking for rear tie rod end ball joints when rebuilding your suspension then BMW 5 series pre 89 are the ones to ask for at the local factors. They have a left hand thread on them and cost £9 as opposed to £40 + VAT at Toyota.

Make sure you ask for the inner rod ends as you need the left hand thread. The outers are right hand and will not fit.

Do the 5 series have the same taper on them? I've tried to find an alternative to Toyota before and found many other manufacturers ball joints with a left hand thread but a different taper.

mk1b part numbers are here:

I'll look up the mk1a ones tomorrow at work when I'm bored!

Phil, if you could that would be great! :D

Could anyone who has pics of the Mk1a assembly please post them up?

Or anyone with a working CD manual (I've lost mine and the hard disc on my other PC has failed - the one with the manual on) post up the assembly diagrams?

Reason I am asking is that I have decided to sort out mine (Mk1b). But I want to post a comprehensive guide in the Knowledge Base to sorting this out but I have no information on the Mk1a :(

Doesn't make a lot of odds. I'm pretty sure the EPC uses the same picture for both.

Ok, could someone with a Mk1a please confirm this? What is the length of the tube and does it have M14 x 1.5 left hand and right hand threads on each end? For reference the Mk1b/SC has a tube length of 163mm (approx, will confirm accurate dimensions tomorrow)

The tie rod tube is the same for all models, it's the TRE and inner arm that differs between 1a and 1b.

Brilliant, thanks Dex :D

EDIT: Phil could still do with the part numbers off a Mk1a if you get a chance. Cheers.

The following bits are common to both:

Tube: 45465-12020
Clamp for tube: 45466-22010
Fixings for clamp: 90101-08265 (Bolt) 90170-08125 (Nut)
94511-00800 (Washer)
(NOTE: This is a correction to my previous list of mk1b parts where I missed the washer and quoted it's part number for the bolt, also don't forget that for one tie rod you will need 2 clamps, 2 bolts, 2 nuts and 4 washers.)

mk1a specific parts are as follows:
Outboard tie rod end: 45046-19155
Inboard tie rod end: 48709-17010

mk1b parts are:
Outboard tie rod end: 45046-19185
Inboard tie rod end: 48709-17020

Then we come to the large bolt which attaches the inboard end. The EPC lists 3 part numbers for this depending on age but I can't say whether or not these refer to 3 different bolt specifications or whether they just have 3 numbers for the same part (which happens from time to time).

Nov 84 - Aug 86: 90105-12037
Aug 86 - Dec 86: 90105-12101
Dec 86 - Dec 89: 90119-12130

It's certainly conceivable that mk1a may use a different bolt as both the tie rod end and the mounting bracket are different to the mk1b parts so to be on the safe side I'd use the first part for any mk1a. The second 2 parts I would expect to be interchangable as both the tie rod end and the bracket use the same part number throughout both time periods. Additionally the Dec 86-89 bolt is listed as M12x1.25x70 whereas the others do not give any size information.

Phil, top man, thanks! :D

Tim, just buy the tubes 2 x 45465-12020. They are 10.73 each.

jeez Tom, did you order all those bearing options for the alternator? More money than sense!

If I'd known you were buying them I'd have put in the extra effort to try and determine which ones you needed!

 Ha, ha, ha! And it's no money and no sense Phil! (It's just a quotation Phil to be honest)
Was wanting to collaborate with G to fix Jo's alternator for her birthday. (G buys bearings, I do the labour - cheapskate I am!)

Well tell Jason to pull his finger out and get it fixed in time for Cadwell 18th Nov . I'd hate to stuff your car into the tyre barriers because of it! (EDIT: I see Jason is going to Cadwell too, excellent!)

======================

Hang on, what's all this about? :? Can someone explain as I don't understand. How can it overlap?

dex wrote:One of the features of the 1a arms is that the two outer pieces lap over each other inside the centre tube to keep the outers from rotating when you adjust the toe. Nice design feature but when both sides seize on the tube you cannot free off one at a time (I learnt the hard way). I suspect the 1b arms don't have this feature because of this problem.

Tim, get the tubes on order anyway, 'cos you'll need them.

It's a much, much easier job than you might think. Will post details later.....
