After speaking 2 mikejc tho he said that one drag of a quarter mile = quarter petrol of tank at 5-600bhp region....

That is shockingly scary... :eye:

i don't think so. a quarter of a tank for a 1/4 mile ? something wrong with that, or has he got a 1 gallon fuel cell or something in the car ?

At what kind of rpm are you seeing 1.7 bar? Just want to get an idea of response etc :D

I'm completely amazed by the GT3076 that's been fitted recently, 1.9 bar of boost by 3700rpm   It's actually faster spooling than the GT28 I was currently running! Although I think for the most part this is a result of the of the manifold and external wastegate :D

Thats pretty responsive, but that doesn't mean to say it'll perform the same on another car. Theres faaaaar too many variables involved. Like you say the result of your quick spool is likely down to the manifold. What happens if you adapt the GT3076 to a standard manifold and run a 2.0L application and not a 2.2L? Will it still have the same spool? I doubt it!

What happens if you bolted the HKS T04S kit onto your engine, it may be laggier, but pull better at the top end, due to factors such as camshafts, head work and intake maifolds.

The GT3076 is an excellent turbo if matched correctly to the right modifications, as are most turbos :D

PS: Oh yes...mapping plays a bit part too.

Its what ive been told...his cars been mapped by Motec...dunno if that makes any difference.

maybe he'll clarify what he said/meant to say if he reads this thread. at 12 seconds of WOT per 1/4 tank he'd have to be going through what 10 - 15 litres of fuel on one run.

alot with play with cam timing as well, you can gain alot more spool or top end depending how you tune those.

Advance the exhaust cam a few degree's and the spool up time will drop but because you opening and allowing some of the exhaust energy out early not all of it is being used to power the piston so peak power will also drop. Good thing is atleast you can play around with the end result

Alot is to do with displacement, headwork and intake manifolds too, aswell as rod ratios!

Here is an example...its all good having a big turbo, but what is the point if you have an engine built, which'll only rev to 8000rpm. And by this i mean taking into account oil pump issues, cavitation, air locks in the water system, valve train / crankshaft lightening, etc etc.

I guess the end result can be played around with, but the point am getting at is, alot is to do with trial and error. Reading compressor maps is all good, but thats only half the story!

Hey Nathan , if your free wednesday night bring that beast along the the local Meet in Kingswinford. Tim should be comming if your not sure where it is. Be nice to see what we need to do to get the sort of power. Theres a few planning big builds that come, we often get about 20 cars turning up.You'd be most welcome bud...

Nath,

have you had any headwork done, such as bigger valves, port work etc? Or do you have an intake manifold. Those are some excellent number for 1.6bar of boost.

Get the dyno plot up bud.

Mike...be interesting to see your dyno plot too.

Cheers

hi,
nathan is at brandshatch this week, he went sunday evening and wont be back till next sunday.
I doubt he'll make the november santa pod either bcause he should be at silverstone racing in the walterhayes trophey, his last big meeting of the year i think.
Nathan hasn't had any work done to his head either, no valve work, no porting, std inlet manifold. he has a sard manifold which came with the turbo and thats about it head work wise.

Craig.

(i know all this cos i work for him and also own a rev3 turbo!!)

At the risk of making this thread repetitive...............well done Nathen. That is astonishing, i almost fell off my chair as I read your original post. i must admit, as some with have gathered from recent posts, I had lost my faith a bit in UK builds against the likes of the US and Japan with so much crap being talked and noone walking the walk when the other countries were consistently banging out great engines. but you , and Mike, have certainly helped to put Uk MR2 builds back up there. from looking around there quite a few more to come too. Makes me feel all kinda warm adnd fuzzy! =D> :?

now go and enjoy the fruits of your labour mate,

a very jealous Bobby.

ps, how much ££££ for you to take me out in it? I've driven some fast machinery but finding it hard to imagine 500hp + in a 2.

Once again.........

pps. My bro has a 504hp Cossie RS500, would love to see the smile wiped of his face (he plays with ferraris for laffs!!!) and would make one hell of a drag race! Whatya think? kick my bro cossie-ass!!!???? please!

Are you kidding!? If this handed my bro's ass to him I'd have thevideo done on vhs, dvd, laserdisc, betamax, and have the photofinish put on postcards, t-shirts, car decals. He's never live it down that he got whipped by what he refers to as "jap crap".

Hi guys and girls,

thanks for all the replies!!! I have just sourced a free wireless link at the holiday inn so i thought id reply.

My head is a std gen 3 head. In hine sight i wish i had gone with bigger valves but again 500hp was never in mind! As for the head work its self its std. I did have to opportunity to do some porting when the head was stripped down but i have a guy who does my machining work who builds some pretty special race engines and he gave it a look over and really couldnt see much to be improved on the head. He said it was one of the best std heads he had seen - Yamaha did their job well =D>

The block is a std rev3 too. I went through all sorts of options in my head - thick walled - sleeved or both but in the end, after speaking to Rob i got the feeling that he thought it was more boost pressure than power that killed the blocks! And at 1.55 bar now i think is fairly safe....... [-o<

The plans for the motor were always to change the block over the winter, probably sleeve my existing one. Now also i will fit bigger vavles, eagle rods and ARP main studs with new high power CP piston Rings. I will also get the venturi flow thingy done to the turbo to eliminate the compressor surge and then a trip back to Rob for some more magic and better results again.

It would be nice to push this turbo a bit harder and see how it really goes!

As for spool up, im getting full boost by about 5,800rpm which for a turbo of its size really is pretty good, Rob was impressed with spool too.

Driving this is brilliant because its like a split personality - an angel and the devil! Because the turbo is a bit lazy you can drive round all day off boost (saving lots of fuel!!) and it acts like a normal car. Sure the clutch is a tad (but not bad at all) sharp and the idle is ever so slightly lumpy but thats it. Then boot it and before you know it the traffic in front is reversing towards you and you cant change gear quick enough! The power delivery is sharp but very controlable so i cant imagine track day driving any hassle at all.

When i was building my build i had one thing in mind...... 1/4 mile!!

I went for a turbo with grunt that would produce the power, lag wasnt an issue for me. When your in the band..... your in! Change gear and your still in. Power is strong from 5 through to 8,250 with peak power @ 8000.

I also went for a 6 puk paddle clutch instead of an organic so it could handle the launches!

And i went for the pro drag spec PFC so i had the lauch control to make launching even better \:D/

Maybe ill have a dabble with some slicks as it would be nice to get into the 10's on a perfect day...... but thats another story!

As for santa pod on the 5th nov i think its a no go cos as Craig mentioned i should be racing at the walter hayes trophy meeting but if i dont i will be there one way or another!

I was hoping to get to shakespere raceway next week but looks like thats also a no go and after thinking about it maybe its not such a bad thing as i dont want any embarrasing moments with exploding cv housings!!!

MikeJC..... what power are you running?

The thing i really like about my build is that i think ive shown that it is possible to do it yourself and that with the right research and ingredients you can put together a pretty potent peice of kit!!! Its all R&D i guess but its puts some roumers to rest as the proof is in the pudding!

Cheers,

Nathan

P.S if anyone is at Brands Hatch @ the weekend for the formula ford festival pop in and see me.

Hi Nathan :)

Power wise i'm still in the dark to be honest as it's still yet to be run up on the rollers. The car is having a few more bits and bobs fitted next week and then having a 2nd map done for race fuel, after which I hope to pop it round to Thor in order to get some numbers :)

I understand what you mean about putting things together yourself. I took the original engine just about as far as possible in the end with just about every bolt on mod known to man finding it's way on to the car lol.

I was running 335bhp @ the hubs in the end via a GT28 running 1.3bar. Like yourself this was achieved with completely standard internals and proved to be very reliable in this spec :)

From what I have seen it's not the boost pressure that get's the better of the 3S-GTE's but the heat produced at this kind of pressure. It's the rings that tend to let go before the piston give up :( Having said that with that monster turbo that your running it really shouldn't be creating the kind of heat of some of the smaller options out there :)

Good luck with it all mate and keep me up to date with how you get on at the strip
