Between 80 and 90 degrees is optimum. Anything over 110 degrees and it's time to back off ! Also remember that running a car hard when the oil is still cold can cause just as much damage as excessive heat! Try if possible to keep your revs below 3000rpm until you are at least up tp 75 degrees.

Some will say the above is over the top, but if your keen on making your engine last as long as poss, the above will help

I only have the stock dials on my Tubby, i generally run under 3000rpm until the temp guage has reached half way (where it tends to stay). I also try and run a few miles off boost and let the engine idle for a minute or so before i switch off.

What are you using to read the temp? And what oil are you using?

130 degrees is too hot at any rate! Specially considering just how cold things are at the moment :? I suggest you have this checked out in some more depth before fitting the oil cooler. Something is wrong!

As for the stock gauge I take it that you mean the water temp gauge?
That being so, you will find that on some cars these tend to react at different rates. On my own car this gauge reaches the halfway mark a good few minutes before my oil is up to full running temp. Just a thought for you :D

Mike - you are confusing 2 different answers! I use a very thin oil - 0-5W...used it in race engines for quite a while with brill results! Would have thought that if anything this would run cooler??

"confusing two different answers" Not sure exactly what you mean by that? All is very clear this end

I was simply asking about the oil used as until now I didn't know. You say you are using 0-5W?

Just means your water temp is spot on. Water temp and oil temp are not related - e.g. you can hammer your car around a track and your water temp will stay constant. Your oil temp will however change considerably!
Small turbos - they're not big and they're not clever!

Just say NO to small turbos!

Fizz, oil that thin isn't recommended ... these engine rely on a bit of thickness to provide the engine bearings that little bit more protection.. If you stuck a thicker grade in, you'll see the oil temp stabilise a bit more. To add to that, the thicker oil will create more resistance as it passes the stock oil cooler, thus the cooler doing its job !

Remember the oil is sprayed to the underside of the pistons, pulling heat out of the pistons too. ..... you running a lean mix ??

I had mine up to 120 deg C at donny ( turbo partly to blame the heat that creates! ) but soon settles around 90 deg C ( the oil cooler is part of the engine coolant and is regulated at 82 degrees C circa, so with the oil flowing through it too, its stabilisers the oil temp out ! Also heats the oil up quicker during a cold startup !! :D

I noticed with a lighter grade oil, the oil temp did sit circa of 100 degrees C !!

thanks JJ....still seems a bit odd - its not as though the engine ever runs or even feels hot! probably a poo gauge - the other question is of course where do you all have the temp sensor???

I can tell in your writing its you chap !! :D You've been quiet, or have you gone and got a life unlike me !!!!!

The probe for mine is directly below the turbo return in the sump, so i can expect fluctuations in oil temp when I start abusing it !

I know most use those adapter plates and I'm not sure if they're actually picking up the heat from the block as well ! Either way, mine sits in the sump - its not a electric one, but a capillary type, so reasonably accurate and constant reading.

No hoses split of late nige .. typical !! Killed off another two turbos though !! Getting together another build.. have a quick thrash out and it'll be int he engine bay and being run in when i do something about it !!

Still knock about with geoff, havent seen him about either on here.. ???

tHERES A POINT - MINE IS SCREWED INTO A SANDWICH PLATE JUST BELOW THE FILTER (OOPS)...was chattin to chris - hypersport- about temps and he sees many 2's with 130 deg !! Well, fitting a remote filter and big cooler this morning - Geof has lost all interest in his 2 since his last and 3rd blow up !! I had bits of his turbo all over my car!!!! (ded funny though).

When my own sensor for the oil temp was in the sandwich plate the oil temp was around 10 degrees higher on average, but still never any higher than 110 degrees even with heavy use.

Take note regarding your oil choice being too thin! 0-5W is simply too thin at both ends!

But rather than me explaining the ins and outs of why, have a little chat with a chap named Guy that i've come to know. He know's more about oil than anyone i've ever come across and is only too happy to chat all day long about it. :D 01209-215-164 Ask for Guy

Again it's hard to say exactly how long it takes for the oil to reach full operating temp as their are many veriables to consider, ie grade of oil, ambiant temp, town driving, motorway driving, idling etc. On my own car it can take anything from 10-15 minutes to reach 75 degrees at tis time of year! :?
