Need information.

Post by D33 »

I'm still looking for a 1994/1995 N/A, UK Spec MR2 and failing miserably. I was told by a mate that pre-1994 models only had 115bhp and after the changes had been made in 1994 they have 170/180bhp.

Is this true?

Can someone enlighten me as to what exactly happened when the changes were made in 1994 ?

I may be forced to go for a 1992 model ;/

What is your budget?

I'm a turbohead so I'm not sure about the NAs, but I'm lead to believe that the bhp did increase although the torque didn't, so the earlier ones I believe are faster. ALthough a BEAMS would be nice 8)

Sure an NA guy will help out.......

Early(up to 94) 3sge engined mr2's were 158bhp,after 94 they were 173bhp except for the last ones which were 168bhp due to catalytic converters being added. There was an early model mr2 with a 3sfe engine fitted to it and this was only 115bhp,you can tell these cars as they originaly had no rear spoiler or front fog lamps.Apparently the pre 94 cars were slightly quicker due the power being lower in the rev range.

this is not true mate! your mate clearly doesnt no the proper facts.
the rev1/2 cars (90-93), are infact faster to 60 (7.2), than the later models (7.7). although the bhp is only slightly less than a 93+ plus model, the 0-60 is quicker! rev1/2 came with "around" (before i get jumped on, lol), 150-160bhp, and the late ones were 173 bhp i think. around this region. but because of the gearing, the rev1/2 can shoot to 60 faster than a rev3+ NA.
your mate is right in a way because there was an old model that did have 112bhp, (didnt come with spoiler or fog lights), but the rest were 150bhp +!

The insurance is too expensive unfortunately ;/

Cheers for the information though, everyone. After 1994 wasn't the design of the front of the car ( bonnet? ) changed, rear lights updated and PAS added ?

Quick and cheap would be 90/91 rev1 these had uncatted 158 bhp and 140 lb of torque. Smaller 14" wheels and the worlds largest steering wheel. Toyota claimed 7.2 seconds 0-60; some mags got them down to 6.9. By late 91 they were down to 154 bhp with cat and 137 lb torque. The torque remained the same through the subsequent revisions. 92 saw 174 bhp, final cars had 168 bhp. Rev 2 onwards easily identified by the 15" wheels had suspension modifications to 'tame' it's handling (debatable as all the serious handling concerns related to turbo road tests, the n/a's didn't have the power to invoke the problems off track unless you drive like a madman.)

G-limited is the luxury top of the range version of the UK coupe..in t-bar or tin top.

I have the rev3 tin top g-limited. 174bhp import n/a

The rev5 G models put out 200BHP. they dont have spoilers..just to confuse u more

So G-Limiteds are imports? :)

yes G-limiteds are imports.Rev 5 did have a spoiler (easily identified-combat type that was adjustable.)Rev 5's also only had 168bhp,due to restrictions on emmisions..Rev 3 on ('94-) had round rear lights, upgraded suspension,colour-coded body parts,side-impact bars and a newer high compression 173bhp 3sge.Also had a one piece spoiler-a varient of those on rev 1+2.As stated previously rev 1+2 had 158bhp but slightly better torque than more recent revisions. For 4,500 grand you should really be looking a '95 on mint rev 3 t-bar with low mileage.

where'd you get this info from mate??
no such thing as a rev 5 without a spoiler??? and unless it had the beams engine, it wouldnt be putting out 200bhp.

thinking about it, i have heard of a G model b4. I always assumed it was a toned down version of a g Ltd (eg with the 3sfe engine). Perhaps its just people not saying the whole model number

Yes it is a toned down version of the G-limited the exact spec I'm not sure of though. I'm sure it's minus several luxuries that come with the G-Limited.
There are very few G Models around to be honest, also they don't have a weedy 3SFE they all have a 3SGE.
The 3SFE 110 bhp engine was fitted to the coupe range around 91-92 only available from the UK. This model is easily identifiable by the lack of rear spoiler and possibly front foglights too.
