Ever had your mr2 stolen

Post by blueorb »

Just a thought before I bag me a tubby, are these cars targeted by thives?

Has anyone had their car stolen?

I dont have a garage to keep mine in, is this going to be a problem?

Due to low response rate of this post, I will assume that mr2's are not singled out for theft!

Just imagine the irony, if mr2's were stolen to export to Japan, so that they can be auctioned back to us again!

Wierd thoughts Im having

Nick it, thrash it, but not burn it surely?

Am i the only one that would like to have this thread finish here before anyone goes into ways to nick a 2 and all the other methods of obtaining nicked cars, im not suggesting for a minute that it was the authors intentions but we have seen this over and over again in the last 4/5 years.
Please lets not dicsuss mr2 and stolen in the same sentence!

Just wanted to know if theft is a problem with these cars.

I DO NOT WANT TO STEAL OR KNOW HOW TO STEAL ANY CAR.

my intentions were innocent, and if anyone is/was stupid enough to describe how to steal these cars, then they should be banned from the forum.

OK?

you could always try using the search facility available to us all to look for history of this, as you already mentioned there are not too many replies to your thread which would confirm that its not so regular.
When you get round to completeing your profile be carefull not to put up any pics that gives too much info away!

I am always worried about it getting stolen, but not had it done yet (living in a dodgy area is great), plenty of scratches though, and woke up this morning to see the mirrors bent the wrong way.

I just dont get why people bother, maybe its because they are scum and will never own anything as pretty, including they're gold laiden girlfriends.

Your 2 should be safe because of 2 things, FIT a decent immobiliser that will stop “joy riders” professional thief’s on the whole will not want a 2 because they are not worth that much relatively speaking. You have only to look in autotrader to see their value.
A stolen Ford fiesta is worth more and easer to sell.
I hasten to add that I am also not a car thief, just common sense and my opinion.

Kind regards,

As has been said, its unlikley to be stolen but far more likely to be keyed/broken into than other cars unfortunatley :(

I had mine stolen so I fitted a keypad - took my keys from my office - they drove it 2 miles, locked it up and left it ! Spare key, new alarm and I was off !!

MR2 i think don't get stripped for parts as most MR2s are similar spec anyway.
If you take a Cosworth, Escort or Fiesta Turbo as an example, there are lesser spec models (XR2I, 3i) and i think thats where the Moneys at! Interior upgrades, body part upgrade etc.

Just a guess but quite an educated one

We've got to be realistic about our MR2s - they are NOT the targets of organised car theives (where cars are stolen to order) as the resale value isn't worth the bother of risking getting caught. Many people on this board think they own some sort of rare automobile exotica, rather than a 10+ year old production car. :D Don't get me wrong - I love my '2 dearly, but I don't worry about it getting nicked or damaged as it's not exactly a Zonda or anything.

The sort of people who are likely to want to steal an MR2 are the sort of people who want to go on a quick joyride. You can prevent them from taking the thing away with a decent alarm/immobiliser system, but there's nothing to stop them torching or damaging the car.

We had our house broken into a couple of years back and the keys were stolen for both my girlfriend's MR-S Si and my GT Turbo. Despite both cars having the same make and model of cat1 alarm/immobiliser they managed to take the MR-S but set the alarm off on the tubby!

The theives left the keys in the ignition of the turbo and rather than the alarm waking us up, it was the bassline of Leftfield's "Release the Pressure" thumping away in my driveway that got us out of bed.

We'd only had the MR-S for a couple of months after a lengthy import process, so were gutted to lose it again so quickly. We had a kitted mk3 at a time when modified roadsters were quite rare so we felt the car would stand out if it we're to be offered for sale within the MR2 community. Photographs (Click here) and descriptions were quickly circulated on the internet and over the next couple of days I got several calls about potential sightings of our missing car.

Thankfully, the police found it abandoned within a couple of days of it being stolen, but it was still a three month wait while Sturgess Toyota in Leicester sourced and fitted a replacement transponder ECU...

I'm still grateful for the support that we received from the MR2 communities at the time. You're a great bunch.
