Original spoiler modification

Have seen it done on a few mk1s where the original spoiler is moved further back & the mounts made smaller so that they dont hang over the boot lid. I think it looks like quite a nice mod & was wondering if anyone has written an article on this?
I tried doing a search but had no luck

I believe that Limeymk1 has done this on his car, if you're reading this, any advice you can offer?

Have a spare spoiler knocking about which came with the car so i thought i would experiment! Think i'll put a third brake light in as well while i'm at it if all goes well Shall take lots of photos along the way & maybe submit it to the knowledge base if its any good

Any advice from anyone who has experience with doing this would be mucho appreciated

Its called the Plumley Spoiler and was pioneered by Dino Plumley in America...

Search for Plumley and you should turn up a few grubs

So do you think i should fill with expanding foam, then use some fibreglass, & then smooth off with filler? I'm a bit concerned about getting cracks where i've filled later on

An adaption I'd make to Bill's guide would be to epoxy some steel or aluminium strips on the inside of the spoiler, accross the hole that's left when you cut the centre support out. This should reduce the flex a bit.

I believe Paul used fibreglass on Lily's spoiler, I'm not sure if he's got any pictures of what he did though.

When I do my spoiler again I'll fibreglass and then skim smooth. I've considered cutting a step in the surface of the spoiler round the holes so I can get some overlap with the fibreglass while not leaving a bulge, but I can't remember how thick the spoiler is at that point.

my spoiler is not the same

did my own custom design and got the bodywork guy to make it for me.

basically i have raised the height of the spoiler, took out the middle support, added a rear brake light, and moved it back, plus extending the sides so it sits in the same space on the car - just longer sticking out to be in line with the rear bumper and raised to approx twice the normal height off the car.

Added metal plates for support, and smoothed in with fiberglass and resprayed etc.

wow thats a big one!

When I chopped mine I filled the spoiler with expanding foam you get in an aerosol. Best left a while to expand. Once dry cuts nice with a stanley knife. Then glass fibred over hole , the expanding foam supporting the fibre.

It seems that everyone recommends using that expanding foam so thats what i'm gonna go with

if you hold on for a day I'll supply some close up construction photos when plumleying mine. will post tomorrow. did it over a year ago no cracks...

Hardest thing to do was to cut the spoiler correctly..you know, mark twice cut once etc etc

Have got as far as chopping off the middle section and the end corners.
Next job will be to sort out the brake light because i need to have the wiring in place before i fill the holes with foam.

Think i'll take a trip down 2 the scrappy & see if i can find a spoiler with one in & just use that

I found using an orbital sander handy for blending the filler work, do ensure you have a nice recess in the expanding foam to put the glass fibre into, i tried to poke the fibre matting under the spoiler edge between the foam, you can then use regular filler ontop.

Also you can use any LED strip from any old spoiler at the scrappy that you think will look good - you then just cut a space to fit. IYSWIM...
