My first ride in a MK1 Supercharger!

Post by Chris \'aka rustboy\' Amm »

went to the halfway house meet today (small turn out shame on you lot!) but i did see steve kingsnorth and supercharged pete :D

Steve kindly/stupidly hehe gave pete the keys to his MK1 MR2 super edition and pete took me out for a spin.
the supercharged MK1 is a mental little car, the MKII turbo is a growling monster! the MK1 supercharger when compared to the MKII is a screaming beast in a whole different way!

i sat there as pete took it up a fair rate of knots so i could feel the power and it pulls, pulls and pulls. no lag just power power and power.
the MK1 supercharger is a mental little car and shame on toyota for not bringing them to the UK!
i sat there and couldn't stop thinking 'a small 16-17 year old car shouldn't be this quick or this much fun!'

it's a whole new beast to the MK2 turbo! the MKII is more a drag strip straight line monster of a car but the supercharger would defo challenge a lot of cars out there on a track! i think everyone should try a MK1 super charger!

cheers to steve and pete for the experience!

LOL yeah mental!

which is why i told pete he won't see me in his pushing over 200bhp any time soon haha! WAAAAAAAAY to scary.

i liked steve's suspension set up, shame he didn't know what suspension he has but it feels real solid!

i'm defo going to save up and try and get another NA MK1 sometime as there just to much fun! will be keeping the turbo if i do too as that's fun in a whole different way! :)

Have to say i'm really enjoying my Mk1a. Had a stonking drive in it yesterday over the peak district, it seems to be handling lovely even though i haven't done the geo yet. Mark reckons its a bit oversteery, but i say its got good balance. Must admit, i'm not missing the SC at all.

i liked the supercharger, gave the car the punch it cries out for. but personally i'd rather have a turbo'd MK1 as u love the spool up noise a turbo makes over the whine of a supercharger.

i'd of loved Paul Wood's turbo'd MK1 that would of been so cool :D

I'm convinced NA is the new way forward now. I can really tell the difference between the extra weight of the SC on the rear end compared to the lighter NA. the NA has a much better chassis balance, no question.

I would like to do a high revving Na that would be in the 160bhp region with cams and a light bottom end.

I'm now convinced less is more when it comes to power.. ;)

if you could get the NA to scream up to 9k RPM honda vtec style that would be neat! wonder what the sound would be like?

miss the sound of my old MK1 with the custom exhaust, sounded real race car like when pushing on but pretty quiet when ticking over, was really nice. you could hear it go down the road when i used to leave for work in the mornings i was told haha

reminds me i must decat my turbo to hear the nice deep throaty noise of the MK2 turbo :D

have to say, i'm having a hoot in the mk1, and it is seriously underpowered compared to my previous car. I'm enjoying learning to appreciate the 2's handling qualities as opposed to just outright grunt.

I'm glad you enjoyed the experience ,Chris!

I know Pete pushes the car more than me so thats why i let him take you out in it and give you the real sc feel!
I'm more of a straight line Freek! so i knew Pete would push it a bit more on the bends, even though i always worry about my car when i'm not driving it but Pete is one of the few people i would trust taking my car out for a run.

When i meet up with you again maybe you will take me out in yours and show me the differences,i have been out in a tubby before and was impressed but that was from someone who didn't know the car too well and didn't push it much!

yeah no probs steve, if i see you down the halfway house meet again i'll give you a blast the same way i went with pete, i don't push it to much now due to a few bonus points on the old licence but i gave pete a good feel of the power. :D

I must admit yours must have been a real monster, being so light!
As you know i was at Donnington in December and would have loved to be a passenger in your sc but we had to leave early for the mk1 Xmas do.

Unfortuanetely i will not be able to experience that now! but hopefully you will show me how an early mk1 will do the buisness!

As it was mine, hopefully you will take me out in it!

It should be megga!

Yep of course i'll give you a ride to remember. ;) Car is nearly finished now, have just put the toyota decals on today and repaired the hole i cut for the heater matrix transplant as well as fitting a new OEM aerial.

Just need to do the geo now and a few odds and sods and it will be track ready. :)

bet you miss your old NA eh Steve? at least you still have a MK1 to enjoy a steve!

i'd love another MK1 as a mess around weekend car, i miss the Mk1 but i'd miss the MKII just as much and doubt i'd part with either!

hopefully when i get money together again i'll be able to afford to have both!

It was really cool chris, and to date the fastest car ive ever driven....i get sick of my own voice bangin on about how quick a mk1 is with a 3s-gte in it,a supercharger isnt in the same league,no comparison,a mk1 turbo is bordering into the supercar bracket performance wise.....there was nothing i didnt roast in mine, scoobs, evos, tubbies an M3,was side by side with a 911 turbo,i couldnt pull away from him but he couldnt pass me either!....ha ha the look on his face is a memory i will keep forever!

Still i wont have to rant on about it for much longer, theres 3 or 4 more IMOCers currently building 1.5's....they will do the ranting first time they take their cars out, nothing and i mean nothing compares to a mk1 turbo,in fact im not sure they are even prepared for how quick they really are.Ive made a bet with megatrons dad that he will sell his supra T after driving his 1.5 for the first time.

I just hope my V6 is somewhere as good.

sounds good paul! out of interest how much would it cost to whack a MK1.5 together? and what about insurance?

i'd love to try it one day! aint got the skills myself though :(

This is how much it is costing/will cost me:

http://www.target-earth.net/builddiary.html

As Paul has said before, most people have done this themselves, rather than getting a garage to do it. So labour costs, pfff... sky could be the limit really!

hmmm i guess as long as i find one with excelent body work it wouldn't matter to much about other bits of the car huh, who you getting to build yours megatron?

interested in doing another paul in a few years? :D

My dad, me.... and Paul has generously offered to donate his time to help us when the time comes.

My dad runs a garage btw, so I'm not really in the same situation as most folks would be.
