what I want to know is when is some one going to setup building bare blocks with forged internals? :D

Why, you after one? :)

I was thinking about doing it after I have finished mine as I have really enjoyed it!

It costs a lot of money to get a block and re-build it though as loads of bits and pieces have to be replaced to do a proper job!

How much would you be willing to pay for a freshly re-built block with forged Je's, eagle rods and new bearings etc??

I'm not at present in the market for one as the other half would murder me, but this time next year i'd be after one. Fensport price for a new assembled block is :-

paste from there site

Genuine Toyota Rev 3 Complete Short Engine - Later Thickwall type, with crankshaft, Conrods & pistons, ready assembled, £300 surcharge applies.
£1337.0

so I guess if you minus stock pistons and rods £1000 + JE's & eagle (£700)

£1700 all in for a remanufactored rev2 block build?

Steve I dont think you appreciate how much work goes into a rebuild. A built block for 1700 - wouldnt be worth anyones time. I would consider doing one but not for that price. :D A company like Norris Designs will charge you £1500 just to rebuild a block with supplied parts so £1700 with forged bits would be the deal of the decade. :D

Forged pistons £350
Forged Rods £350
ARP mains £70
Bearings £120
Rebore £90
Paints £20
Oil £20
Delivery + collection to the machine shop for reboring £20

Thats 1040 for a basic built bottom end and no labour involved. You need to consider the running around, time spent, tool used etc Then you need to factor in the cost of the block itself - new is £1300 (you cant by a new block without rods / pistons) There are very few blocks kicking around most are complete clips which cost around 1k.

Then there is all the other fuss ...

Rental of a van to collect the engine £50
Rental of the van to deliver the engine£50
Petrol for the van £30

I was thinking of doing a built block and ready for purchase but then people would want x and people would want y and the costs goes up and then they still want it for bottom dollar and then complain when somthing goes wrong. :?

Best way is to buy a block now and build it then just swap yours out and pop the new one in. I have been pondering another build to possibly replace my current built engine but that will be done in my spare time and swapped over when the time comes.

thats for a brand new unused engine according to fensport 'new genuine toyota parts'

essentially if you got one of these then you could simply swap out the pistons and rods with forged ones? or is it not that simple? Then it would only be £2000 for a totally brand new bottom end??

nice and shiney! Bender Unit's right - get a lick of paint on it!

I'm getting jealous - I'm still waiting for my pistons to be delivered, but I haven't seen my block cleaned up yet. Hopefully I can get some pics of it before it all goes back together.

Hopefully I can spend the Easter break getting it all back together. It's a nightmare deciding what not to replace though. My car isn't "worn out", so I don't want to go overboard changing everything if I can help it, as I've already blown my budget by 50%.

Hi,

As bender say's theres a lot of work. Thay may be the bottom end....but what about the head? and the rest of the work to put the rest of the engine togehter? cam belt, pipes, turbo, manifold etc....

I would say that it's cost me about a grand to re-build my block and head. That doesnt include the turbo and downpipe etc, that I bought!

Considering I did it all myself, 1000 is still a load of cash! add a few days labour and the costs spiral!!

I've blown my budget by about 50% too....and I havent sorted the suspension/brakes yet. so it will be blown by 100% by the time I'm done ;)

Looking good paul !

Perhaps could should have got the block decked at the same time ? quick skim on the top face of the block... woul dhave saved you time scraping it.

As a tip, before you go down scrapping all the crud off the top, cover all the holes, especially the ones on the exhaust side... the oil galley it as the bas of some of those holes which are not straight through... If you look, the side where it feeds the turbo, theres a like a ridge all along the block / oil filter - you'll also see a large allen key sided bolt at each end of the block where from the factory it was bored all the way through !

If you want to clean the galley out, either remove these end allen key bolts ( very tough !) or turn the block upside down and spray brake cleaner in the holes of the turbo feed and oil filter areas. Ensure you coat it afterwards with WD40 or paraffin - prevent surface rusting.

Another option would be to just buy a built block from the US with all the parts inside it. Get it sent out by sea and shipping is not that expensive. as for what parts you get taxed on, well, unless it comes with a spec sheet who's to know
Small turbos - they're not big and they're not clever!

Just say NO to small turbos!

Paul, VHT paint is the way to go for the block, comes in brush form or spray. I went for spray, 2 cans will see a good coat and the VHT paint goes on really well - its the engine enamel stuff. I taped up the top of the block with masking tape and the bottom and all the other important bits i didnt want paint in. Then for all the screw holes etc just use small screwed up paper scraps - take care not to get paint on / in oil ways etc. Thinners will strip off any over spray if its fresh.

In classic Blue Peter style!

Here is one I did earlier :)
