What car to get next??!!

Post by Hedgehog Dodger »

After the annoying situation I have been put in - driving around in a 1.4 Nissan Sunny  - I am in a situation which asks the question, What to do next!

I am going to drive around in this car for about 6 months and going to save some money. I still want a RWD turbo charged car (not going to let a concrete post put me off that) but want to chose wisely, as I will drive this car of hopefully 2 years min. I am not bothered about practicality as yet so 2 seats is ok.

I know the Skylines are 4WD, but I think I could put up with that

So what does everyone think?

Cheers chaps/chapesses

get another mr2 again - save up a bit extra and you might get a spoiler as well this time! seriously i think with all those options you'd be very happy - 2.8 stroked 32 sounds rather nice

I can only tell you what I've found with my Supe as I have no experience with the Skylines... other than sitting in them at the dealer (was looking at Impreza, older Evo's, R32, GT4 and the Supra TT) and not being impressed - very much like the Impreza and Evo in that the interior is very much like a normal saloon car; although i expect some folks like the fact you can get 4 people in - despite there being 4 seats in the Supe, you'll NEVER get anyone older than about 3 in there!

Anyway, the Supra is not really in the same category as the MR2 Turbo (nimble B-road blaster) or Skyline (nutter 4wd drag mobile); to my mind its more like a Japanese Aston Martin - a big GT cruiser, with a silky smooth straight six.

I'd also reccomend you try both the auto box and 6 speed versions of the TT; I'm a dyed in the wool manual shifter (take a look at my profile)... but the auto box of the Supra is one of the best gearboxes I've ever used, never mind the best auto box. Also, for me, driving in a lot of traffic and stop-start around Newcastle, its a dream.. and certainly no slower in real world terms (~5.1 compared to ~4.8 to 60, big deal; who wants to burn clutches out at that rate every time?).

For me, IMO, the Supra is the classier car, the Skyline always looks like the turbo nutter mobile with its sharp angles, spoilers and wings.

Be warned though, running one is expensive. I get, at best, 27-28mpg, when driving like Miss Daisy. But the noise of that straight six when turbo no.2 comes online is fantastic!

true that, the supra tt is very good. the auto is better than the manual in my opinion because if you are even fractionally slow on the upshift in the manual, the auto will have you.

mpg is on par with the mr2 turbo and on long cruises, probably better.

Would have to say go for the Supra TT.Dont be put off by automatic though.I have drove the mates several times and the gearbox is superb.I seriously doubt you would get better gearchanges in a manual. What is happening with the MR2?.

in had a similar dilemma b4 buying my new car-r32 GTR, Supra TT Auto (couldnt afford decent manual), or Mr2 T.

I have gone for the mr2T becuase of tuning costs.

Gotta be another mr2 Dan really. The others are amazing cars but too big to be practical on uk roads. A - B in most cases i would say the 2 would be quicker due to size and weight.

get a doctor to put you down mate !

oh sorry.. you meant what car to get next ! - well looking at the voting - another MR2 seems to be the choice... as it's only the side that took the impact are you not considering using the internals of your old car to build a bigger better version ?

when I wrote off my first MR2 (someone drove into my rear wheel - that's all it took ! :-( ) - I kicked myself for ages when i realised i could have bought the car back for peanuts ! - why didn;t the insurance people tell me this !! :-( gits !

get another 2 mate - that's my vote for what it's worth - you wont be able to chuck a great big car around the twisties even with 4wd surely - or at least it won't be as much fun !

Another MK2 Turbo obvious mate!

Putting a poll up on which car to get on an MR2 owners site is going to be slightly biased!

Dan, as much as i love the car's listed & would kill to own any of them, i honestly don't think you could have as much fun in them as a whole package as you can in the 2. (although admittedly i've never driven any of the others)

maybe in time, with a clear head for decisions, you could make the next logical step of "upgrading" to one of these cars, but as has been mentioned earlier, they are more GT cars than crazy ar$ed fun machines than the 2.

for now i would definitely stick with the 2's, have some fun, then once the 'honemoon period' of 2 ownership runs it's natural course, then move on.

but at the end of the day mate, it's your choice!

hope that helps/makes sense!!

Hi,

If you want something different, then go for the Supra TT. I've owned 2, an auto and a manual. I have to say that the auto was a good box, but the manual was far more fun and felt 'quicker'.

I cant really comment on a skyline, I've never owned one, but I will buy one at some point....I want to try it :)

Oh, if you get a Supra TT with any mods, expect high fuel bills. I was getting 10mpg out of mine, but it was kicking out about 420bhp at the crank ;)

In standard form they are quite economical I think

Paul.

I'm going for MR2.

Im guessing you are not going through insurance as you were going to sell it?

Why not keep it and transfer the engine?? Come on tell us :P

Even if you won't then it's still the wise choice. The others will cost more to insure more to run etc. The MR2 is also cheaper to mod when compared to the others on the list.

I wouldnt get a skyline though.
