Tyre Set Up

Could someone please confirm what size tyres are best to run on 17s? How much wider should the rear ones be?

I'm running 215/235... it depends on how wide your rear alloys are. Mine are 7J all round (not ideal at all) and 235 is about the max you can fit. The grip is excellent though! In general you want 20mm difference between front and rear.

Yeah 20mm difference is best. I'm running 205/215 front to rear. Seems to handle well enough.

I'm running this setup as well, not bad for general running around but the rear tends to slide a little when getting pushed, but when there dead i'll be putting 225 on the rear.

I thought most people found the stock setup prone to understeer, which having 205/225 helps cure (at the cost of making oversteer more likely). Certainly I'm considering getting 205s for my next set of fronts instead of 195 (on stock rims).

Don't forget that a 20mm diff may be optimal for a non-staggered setup. The standard alloys are an inch wider at the rear which allows for a 30mm+ I'd imagine?

that's fair...
but as you say you are trading off understeer with more oversteer with those.

215 / 245 is just about spot on - as mentioned before (but not on stock rims obviously )

As Frank said, for anyone running 17 inch rims, with a rim width of 8 or more inches at the rear on a staggered set up, 215/245 is pretty much your best bet.

running 205/215 currently on mine ... rear tyres are ready for a change ... so should i put 225's on rear?

as for pressure on 32 front and 35 rear .... is that right to?

I had massive problems with my tyres feeling crap and wearing out.

So I ws playing Forza Motorsport on the Xbox and I had read up that it had one of the most realistic physics engine going, So I had a play with the Tyre pressures with the same wheels I have on my car,

I lowered it 40mm and put 215/235 17" Rims on it, and them messed with the pressures. I got the best Lateral G's with...

32psi Front
40psi Rear

So I went and transferred this to the car and I must say it does feel better. I stopped getting the rear end wobble and the tyres lasted longer (Full year with no ware back or front except for the one tyre i had to replace because of a nail, well 3 nails to be exact).

It might not be the best way of doing it but I have kept these setting ever since.

I'm currently running 215 front & 235 rear, mainly because I prefer to have the car oversteering rather than understeering. There is nothing worse than finding the front end washing out on you mid corner, much better to have some oversteer IMO.

I always liked 215x40 (27 psi) front, 235x40 rear (29 psi) with Bridgesone S03's.

The tyre pressure will depend on the construction and brand of tyre, Toyo's have ultra soft sidewalls and need high pressure, Bridgesone//Yoko have hard sidewalls, which means you can get away with lower pressures.
