Mounting Amp in the Frunk

Post by Jonmurgie »

Have spent the weekend installing a decent stereo in the MR2 and have a question for those who have mounted an Amp in the Frunk (front bonnet thing)...

How have you actually mounted the amp and do you have any pictures?

We've kind of 'bodged' it in a little by cutting a board that fits over the top of the spare wheel, we've then bolted that TO the spare wheel and then the amp screwed down to the board. Not idea I say as the spare wheel is now useless and it looks quite unitdy.

So how have others mounted amps up there? I didn't want to put it behind the drivers seat and the amp (Kicker IX404) is too big to go under either of the seats.

Thanks for any advice!

Cheers

I've been meaning to redo mine, I've done much the same but it's retained at the top by bungee cords to allow me access to the wheel and battery still.

Proper bodge

I had mine there for a while, but ran out of space! Though i may be tempted to go back there soon as i have replaced some of my amps.

If moving the spare wheel out of the way would help, it will fit in the boot if you let the pressure down a bit (would have to carry a footpump around with you. The wheel will also fit behind one of the seats.

If you are trying to sort the rack neatly, the best way to do it would be in card, its easy to cut and shape, then use this template over some MDF!

Thanks Neil... I did some searches on here and came across your 'wheel in boot' trick!

Trouble we found was how to actually FIX the board down in there as everything is at angles and there's so much 'stuff' under there around the sides and the back bit... found putting it ontop of the wheel kept it out of the way of all the other stuff!

There's a stereo installer chap works downstairs @ PowerStation so I'll have a chat with him about it :)

As some people on her may know, i have recently registered as a sole trader, and am going to be going into business with car audio, (have recently sorted a Kenwood dealership, just finalising!) I did an install last week and the person i completed it for was inetersted in something similar to this, so will be producing one for him.

Over the next weeks i will be getting it sorted, that will probably be a combination of fibreglass to meet the curves and MDF. Also looking to get a hinge in to allow easy access! ONce its sorted i will put a picture up here

ONe other trick that may be worth a try. is to turn your spare wheel upside down, so that you are looking into the dish, creates a lot more space there!

If that's the case, then good luck to you Neil. I've just got round to installing one of your sub boxes (after about a million years of it kicking about) and am well impressed... \:D/

Good god, I was looking for ages thinking how can I make some more space in here and get myself some better mounting points. Not once did I think of that

lol!

When somebody pointed it out to me i couldnt believe how much more space it made, you just need a small bolt (cant remember thread / size) to keep the wheel in place then and your sorted

Neil

If you do start doing the Audio installs I would be interested in getting some work done on my front install. I currently have the amps mounted in a similar fashion to Chris Baynes Setup. Only difference is I have 2 Alpine amps side by side.

Problem is it's starting to sag. I'm looking for it to be redone but stronger and made to look nicer.

Nice one. Look forward to hearing from you. Point to note on my setup is that I have it hinged so that I can still easily access the battery and the spare tyre.

I just hope you guys have thought about what to do if you *do* get a flat, and you have to get one of the rears in there...

i take it you mean by putting the boards on top and not by puting the spare in the opposite way.

I have never tried putting one of my rears in there. but makes me wonder if the bonnet would shut without any board on top anyway!

I'm sure i would find a way to sort the problem O:) Theres no point living life in fear
