Lack of space. You only have a mile to reach your terminal speed and Mark's taller gearing takes longer (or more power) to wind it up...

one thing ive never understood is why on the 1/4 mile you get different times and completley different speeds?

1/4 mile times

B26-----Andrew Standring----12.09-----117
B25-----Michael Commons---12.67-----110
B22-----Mark Edwards--------12.80-----109
B20-----Andy Forster---------12.92-----107
B27-----Adam Riley-----------12.98-----112
B28-----Toni Gladding--------13.18-----111
B24-----Nick McCann---------13.45-----109
B23-----Andrew Martin-------13.61-----108
B21-----Neil Johnson---------13.78-----105

a bit random, how does that work out????

Marks' car has gearing which will enable it to reach a theoretical 180mph,his ability to accelerate to that speed is down to bhp. I understood it that the totb top speed run was only held over 1 mile, which means to reach 151mph in only 1 mile from a standing start is pretty good going. At the Bruntingthorpe jtuner bash mark manged over 165mph on a 2 mile straight.

Car 1 gets a great start, has good legs for the first 1/3 of the run and then builds speed at a slower rate to cross the line at 10 seconds.

Car 2 gets lots of wheelspin, struggles to get the power down over the first 1/3 and then 'hooks up' with huge acceleration to draw level with the other car and also cross at 10 seconds.

Car 2 will be going faster as it crosses the line.

Thats cool, like i say im not havin a dig or anything and i know he's got a quick car.... but how long would it take him to reach 180mph  if he hit 151 in 1 mile then it took another 1 mile to gain another 14mph.

Please dont take this as a bash at mark, im just asking out of interest.

Marks car has a theoretical top speed of 180 mph, but theory and practice are often worlds apart. What has been over looked so far is the nature of drag on a car once past 150 mph. It takes significant amounts of extra bhp to help over come the effects of drag placed on a car once at a certain speed. In short I personally feel that Marks car has the gearing to reach 180+ bhp but at the current time lacks the power :( However i'm sure the latter will be over come before long

Plus, for example if you're travelling at 150 mph, it takes 24 seconds to cover a mile, so you're eating up the distance quicker as well.

He didn't enter last year due to a blown engine and the lack of will to get it fixed, and I quote... " I can't be bothered to fix it, I'll just let someone else win it this year" lol classic

how come he was so much faster this year than 2 years ago, must have put some serious money in to it, sounds like he had gone to a sequential gearbox for instance :-k

Keith Cowie won last year, it was the turning point for TOTB really, a dedicated drag car that hasn't seen a shopping trip in it's life taking over from Ronnie and a car that is built around the true spirit of the TOTB event - a daily driver with huge potential.

Ahh i see Was he the years before winner then? Thats the first TOTB i've been to so pretty new to me, someone told me he was last years winner but obvioulsy wrong #-o

.....And yeah i always thought it was supposed to be cars that are actually used on the road..... I was reallyed impressed with one of the scoobies.... On the way up there a scoob cam flyin past us, gibbo said catch up with it so off we went, pulled up next to it filming it (can be seen on the vid) he waved and let us carry on filming..... Was the scooby clinic one. Then when we got up to TOTB what do we see flying up the track... yep that exact car.

Now when we saw it we must of had another hour worth of travelling left so he came from a fair distant. Thats what its all about, driving the car up there, then racing it.... not taking it up on the back of a trailer. =D>

I believe Rocket Ron won the event three times in a succession before stepping out of last years event for the above reasons ;)

I'm sure with a bit of imagination, some of the key rules could look like this...

1. Cars must be road legal and driven to the event (trailered vehicles would be disqualified).
2. Control tyres must be used (could be Toyo R888's or to be more competitive, T1R's).
3. Odometer readings could be taken and noted on the entry form, so that scrutineers could tell if the car has been trailered.
4. 99 octane (or less) fuel must be used.

I think it would make for a very much more level playing field.
