***ing greasy roads

Post by ptapta »

Sun to rain to sun to rain. Totally caught me off guard round a roundabout and did a full 180 and dinked the front near side on some railings. Could have been alot worse but im still gutted...lucky i was going slow

Image

Railings were broke round the roundabout so there's a couple of light scratches a deep scratch, a pierced hole and a crack. The paint on the bumper wasnt primered to flex so its cracked off by the fog too.

Was wondering if anyone knew a ball park figure of what i might be charged for getting this sorted? The car was only resprayed last year so id expect colour mismatch should be less of a problem.

I might be able to get away with doing it myself yet. I couldnt bare to look at it any longer before so ill see tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune!

I have had exactly the same problem, when it started raining yesterday i couldnt get any traction in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear while accelerating gently, the back end kept stepping out.
And on a roundabout in 3rd gear doing 20mph, again, gently on the acceleration the back end broke free.

I was quite surprised, i managed to catch it, but the BMW next to me got a little fright.

Sorry to hear that mate :(

Take it easy and hope ya get it sorted. I think there is a red front bumper on ebay?

Might be worth a look.

Hope that helps.

Aye its a pain. Right before i go on holiday too :(

Ive usually managed to tame the twitching it gives but as soon as it started stepping out last night i knew it was going all the way round. Its never thrown out like that before - i was just maintaining slight throttle right round. Its a big roundabout too.

Dont think its drastic enough to warrant a new bumper but ill have a looksies. Anyone got any ideas of a price i might be looking at for repair though??

REALLY?

ive never had this problem at all tbh, only if i was beig stupid and asking for it....your car looks as low as anything, rev3 setup and stepping out in 3rd gear, id be afriad to use the car to be fair.

to the orginal poster......just put it down to a little inexperiance, things like this can happen to us all, and like "quigonjay" said, soon a you even mention turbo, mr2 and roundabout you know something bad can happen.......i swear 95% of all little crash, or major crash posts involved a roundabout.
hope you get it sorted fella.

Yeah it surprised me loads!
The car is low and its running 245/40/17 wheels at the rear with Dunlop Le Mans digi-tyres (meant to be good in the wet), but still im losing traction anywhere above 3000rpm. :-k

I just have to drive sensibly (like i always do....), though it only really happens the first day it rains, must be the greasy roads......

Reference origional post, what gear were you in when yours stepped out and what speed / revs were you at?

Yeah the roads seem bad at the moment, mine twitched on a couple of roundabouts yesterday only doing about 25mph. My rear tyres are only a week old too.

I was going into third round the roundabout trying to keep my revs low with the speed (dont know speed or revs but it certainly wasnt fast). I cant believe how easily it stepped! Ive had her for a year now and i coped with snow and heavy rain last winter this was totally different. Annoys me cause I drive like such a granny in bad weather cause there's no fun not getting power down.

There's no excuse though, she was always on her way round and i didnt catch it. Just shows how 1 temporary lapse of concentration can cause this hassle! #-o

Been looking about for tips on filling sanding and spraying myself seems doable. Still wouldnt mind finding out what i might pay to get it down professionally though :|

Ironically i finished my dissertation a couple of months ago on the impact testing of composite materials. Maybe i pi$$ed off the composite gods :eye:

I must be driving a completely different car. I know i haven't driven it for a few months but i have never even been slightly concerned about losing it. I do have TRC tho.. :D

Tyres probably not scrubbed off yet, depending on how much you driven the car.
All wheels come with a protective "film" on it that makes the first load of miles feel like you driving on glass.
On a bike its well f***ing scarey.

Thats the honest reason all these sort of accidents happen, moment you stop thinking you give a little to much gas on an off-camber roundabout things happen suddenly.

Your error was changing gear in the middle of a corner which unsettled the car (roundabout is a corner). Never do that in those kind of conditions.

I had similar sort of damage on mine repaired recently..it cost me £300, although that price did include respraying all of the nosecone not just the corner.

Same problem here did a 180 and also doing 25mph when it slingshotted into bollards and railings left on the side for barricading people behind em that was the rev 1, i damaged drivers wing and bent underneath killed the side repeater and dented my door in 2 places and 1 or 2 smaller marks ohh and smashed my mirror the electrics, casing are fine though and scuffed by front bumper which i dont mind as i have a toms ready to go on there.

The rev 2 driving and handling is much better with traction control having owned and driven within 2 minutes so weather was the same and both the handling and cornering with the rev 2 is much more enjoyable
As for ther rev 1 you dont respect her, she lets loose once in a while which sounds the same as she did with me mate

Yeah the slight jerk of changing gears unsettled her - even at low revs!

Got home from work and cleaned the area up a bit and t-cutted bits. Its not actually too bad. I got off lightly this time. 8-[

Cheers for the concern and help guys! :)
