My Golf 1.9 TDI on an 04 plate is 115bhp model engine.

The more power models are GT Tdi arn't they?

I cannot see the GT TDI tuned to 175 keeping up with a rev3 turbo in any way or form.

My brother used to have the 90bhp Bora Tdi which I drove quite a few times. It was OK, nothing more. The 2-stroke-style power band would get me down personally. My old Rev3 turbo made 150 lb/ft by 2300rpm and never dropped below 220lb/ft before 7200rpm. That's what I call a powerband! (yes I know the diesels have a very flat torque curve but not much happens until you get the boost and they don't want to know after about 5k rpm).

I'm willing to accept the higher power turbodiesels are pretty quick but I don't really like the power delivery myself. As an everyday car they do make plenty of sense though.

Funnily enough, I observed just the behaviour mentioned from a MkIV Tdi on my way home yesterday, just before reading this thread....

I agree, the one I was in was nowhere near as quick as my tubby, but the guy in the first post has an N/A accoring to his garage.

Why would any sane person in a hurry be at 4k in an NA?

Come on, at that revs an F1 car would be a dog. If it runs at all...

Basically a TDI with similar torque would keep up with a tubby if the Tdi was trying and the tubby wasnt trying.

over here in N.I nearly all the young pups are driving TDI's from 306's leaving chimney style trails of black smoke to sub 200bhp golf/toledo's etc.
and torquey as they are in my experience the drivers have a strange notion they are all driving supercars! against my rev2 na the 130bhp or so models give a good batle up to 80~mph then its all over but i've found it tight against the 150 standard models or the 130's that are chipped as i only really gain on them into the triple figures which only exceptional circumstances allow me to go to

with 50mpg or there abouts though they definately make sense!

(not like crazy mr2's though but who wants to be sensible all the time??
not me! oh yeah...\:D/)

Hell yes, four seats, five doors and enough of a hole in the back to throw a fridge in. 0-60 in around 9, and I'm easilly getting 50mpg. :D

Golf MK2 GTI 8V

Post by boosch »

Anyone from the Golf Mk2 GTi background? i was a huge fan until they rusted a hole in my wallet, but i keep getting this golf twinges, the mk 3s and 4s have always been low in my opinion, too much weight too sluggish, like tank, but i always liked the response of the early Mk2's 1.8 GTi 8 valves not the 16. could i be getting cold feet??? pass me that spatula, i need a slapping! J

P.s. people who put GTI or TURBO badges on their low spec chavtastic tin can cars should be eaten. I had a freind lift his 'eh 'hm "GTI" to find a whopping carb - inject my ass :^o

I only drive an NA and can unequivocally say I have smashed every TDI I have ever came up against  even in the rain.

Its about time the designers at VW got their thumbs out of their a55e5 and brought out a replacement, the design is what 20+ years old now and still it looks cack.

Maybe a bit harsh but as you can probably tell I'm not a big fan of golfs, any of them.

What an apt topic - since I bought my MR2 NA the cars that always give me hassle are Golf or Bora TDi's!

remember on 5th gear when they raced that Astra VXR against the tuned turbo diesel one? That was extremely close...

Also, don't forget a diesel won LeMans...

diesel engines are being developed at a higher rate than petrol, eventually you will see parity, then diesel will take the lead.

You heard it here first!

nope i disagree mate diesels are running at such high compresions now they are at there limit imo,i mean can you seriously imagine an oil burner running 800Bhp from 2 litres?the fuel isnt exactly explosive isit.maybe im talking out of my ar$e but it makes sense in my small head :-k

yeah there comon rail direct injection super high pressure beesties but its still diesel fuel going into the cylinders

I heard an interview with a guy from Ford on the radio recently. They were talking about the motor show and the whole "eco" thing. The guy was saying that engines will start to go down the direct petrol-injected/force induced route (like the new Golf GT/GTi). He reckoned there will be a petrol Focus in the very near future giving 70+ mpg.

Makes sense to me too: small capacity turbo/supercharged/twin-charged petrol engines tuned for economy. Imagine the base model Focus being something like a 0.8 litre twin charge! This could easily get you to the 100ish bhp mark.

Also, car manufacturers are already having to look at making cars more light weight. This would suit petrol engines. Deisels with their narrow, but high torque bands suit todays heavy cars.

IMO diesels have their place, but not in sports cars (we need to rev!!!), and new petrol engines could re overtake in terms of all round ability.

just my 10bucks worth.......
