Speed bumps (rant)

Post by MRV6 »

Well it's that time of year again (the end of the financial year) and the council is busy wasting money so they can get next years budget putting down bloody speed bumps. Why don't they just come round and brick me bloody garage up so I can't get my car out at all. They should put warning lights on them so low flying aircraft can avoid them and if we circum navigate them they should employ Apache attack gunships to take motorists out. Ok rant over, what I would like to know is if I incur any damage to my car are they liable for any damage.

Not if the calming measures are built in accordance with the highways specifications :(

If they are too high you have a case though - I'm fairly sure one near me is too big but it's a dangerous place to go and measure it because all the normal cars fly over it at 60+ - only people in low cars have to slow down and we are in a huge minority!

Dented my NuR Spec on it when I first moved in :(

They are just so anoying when you put so much money into your'e car. As you say you can't go anywhere without encountering one and it's only people with low cars who suffer. Sorry about the NuR Spec Michael :( Thanks for the info.

I was told of some guy that actually did that! Gave the excuse he was driving to work in it and one night there where none and then the next day they were there he had no other way of getting to work as his digger scoop bit was broken so he had to chop it off the road.

Maybe a myth :? ?

Get your injury claims in now to your local council...

I've never had any problems with any humps being too high, but I pass some everyday, and the difference in speed they can be taken in a normal car compared to the '2 (without losing your teeth) is quite staggering.

To me, just another example of how this stupid, f******, godforsaken country is going. Screwing over the people who practically run this country, along with drinkers and smokers - makes me physically sick. Like Honest John says, speed bumps are traffic harming measures...

There was a guy who did that. Claimed that there was a high volume of HGV's passing down his road at night, when they went over the speed hump at night they made such a noise that couldn't he couldn't sleep, thus being a detriment to his health. So he hired a JCB and dug it up, the local council took him to court. Dunno the outcome

Can't remember if it was on the local news, used to live in Bristol, so it wouldn't surprise me!

They put two of those 'islands' in the road near us, that make the traffic have to stop for the other lane to pass. Needless to say they got removed when the council found out that the accident/injury rate had increased ten fold since they had been put in. I would rather they just put a speed camera up if they want to slow us down. At least that way you dont damage your car, but as we all know they only put speed cameras up in places where they know they will rake in the cash. I haven't seen one outside a school yet ?????

I had a near miss with a Barry boy in a Corsa last night, he thought he could sneak through the traffic calming chicane when it was my right of way but got his timing completely wrong and had to reverse back down the road again ;)

Speed bumps and chicanes...don't get me started.

You're right there was a guy who dug up a speed bump outside his house, and I fully sympathise with him. We've got a relatively small bump outside our house but the noise...especially skip lorries and old shed cars with old shed trailers it can do your head in on a weekend morning. By the way the Council 'came to an agreement' with him which basically meant they moved the speed hump.

As for chicanes...had a very tight call last week. I was in my Discovery full of German Shepherds mind :D Lickle Honda HRV thing thought he'd make it despite me having priority- he was wrong. It's the first time I've ever seen someone scream at the wheel......it was rather tight  I think he might have scratched his alloys... Oops. He might think again next time.

Had a near miss a few weeks back, width restricted railway bridge. I was already half way through when a large 4x4, who had priority, came straight at me without slowing down. If i'd have braked i'd have slid into it. I floored it and nipped out of his way with an inch to spare.

Hmm, I wonder if a Mk1 would make a good dune buggy for those speed bumps...

Just to say that if your car is UK spec (ok so not many here!!), and the ride height is unmodified, you should be able to get over the bumps. If you damage your car (not through bad driving) you should contact the council and I believe they will have to repair the damage as they should have made it so that every standard car can pass over it. In addition, I believe they will then go out and lower the height of the bloody thing!!

If you have an import, and your ride height is the same as the UK spec, I also don't see why you couldn't blag it............?

Otherwise, to those low riders - hard luck guys n gals, must be a real pain!! If there weren't so many bumps around, I would already have lowered my car!!
