Clunky noises after changing shocks....

Post by Club Tropicana »

I recently changed the shocks and springs on the front of my '92 n/a, and it drives fine in a straight line (sooooo much better), but when turning and on full lock I get these clunking noises, it sounds like the springs twisting (it does it when the car is stationary). I made sure the the top support for the spring was properly seated on top of each shock, so i'm slightly baffled as to what's causing it - any ideas anyone? :-k

had the exact same problem with mine the last 2 weeks since i put my standard springs back on. I'm also getting a knocking noise when going over bumps so something certainly aint right :(

do you have standard set-up?

i'm planning on taking it all apart again tomorrow night, re-fit it all and hope its all good!

Had a similar noise on a previous car - it was the topmount bearings had seized. Changed them over and it went away. Steering got smoother too.

i remember when putting my shock back together that the top-mount bearing did look a little strange but couldn't remember ever looking at the before so didn't know what they should look like.

maybe thats the problem! :-k

Hi, yeah, mines a standard setup inc. brand new droplinks. The springs are lejsfords (or something) and the shocks are KYB inserts. I'll have a look at the topmounts, it seems strange that it did'nt do it before though

I had KYB inserts and springs put on my 2 and when I got it back the strut top mounts were goosed causing clunks and twangs when steering left or right....
