How long do YOUR tyres last?

Post by injury_ian »

hello Chaps

Just wondering if you were getting the same sort of tyre wears as i was?
I've had 3 sets of tyres in just over a year (rears only) the fronts are acting as if they self healing!

Bought car on 55K, APR '04
SO3's installed @ 57K MAY '04
<engine spat a piston - off road for 6 months>
SP9000 installed @ 63K FEB '05
and now on 68K im down to the tread wears again!

seems a bit insane but budget tyres seem a good option when compared to 3 sets of premium tyres a year (that assuming body damage with the budgets! )

Eveyone else in the same boat?

I use toyo Proxes rate them very highly for handling, my rears last about 12-14 months and the fronts about 18-20months as a rough estaimte. :-k

However i dont do track days or lots of donuts/burnouts etc...

Quite boring like that!

Same with the Mk1, my rears last about 6k with a track day thrown in to finish them off. This is with a soft compound tyre (T1-s Poxies).

used to get 6-7K miles on a set of A539s including 6-7 trackdays. Was happy enough with that.

Had some Jupiter tyres on the front, 2 years later and the tread hadn't gone done at all - I decided this wasn't good and replaced them :)

Rears, bought the car with Yokohamas on (A022's I think), they looked pretty new - they lasted a year (10K miles).
Got Pirelli Pzero Assymetrico's, they lasted around a year (10-12K miles).
I'm now with Toyo Proxies T1R's, they're looking to outlast the previous tyres =D>

Toyo T1-R's coming up for 7k and will need replacing in about 1k :(

The fronts (also T1-R's) were changed at the same time but look like i put them on yesterday .. spose it says something about my driving :D

I've not had my Mk2 for long enough to have any noticeable wear ( Dunlop SP9000s ), but a mate at work never managed to get more than 7K out of a set of rears ( usually S03s ) on the 3 NAs he's had.

My personal best was 47K out of a set of Michelins on my first Calibra - I think the 4wd helped even out the wear there, and it was mainly motorway driving ( commuting Blackpool to Leeds every day for 2 years  )

guys, the accelerator is not a digital device. Using part throttle from standing and while cornering can greatly reduce your tyre wear.

Seriously, I don't drive mad around corners, and I don't wheelspin from standing. I've been getting around 8-10K from a set of rear Yokos.

That's odd. I've had cheapo Nankangs (steady Lauren!) on my N/A for 14 months. Done 30k miles. Replaced the rears after 25k and the fronts are down about 50%.

Okay, so most of my driving is in a straight line down the motorway but I don't drive like a gay. Honest!

Had the same set of Bridgestone Potenza S01's on the Supra for 3 years now. No appreciable wear.

It all depends on how you drive.

Some of you are getting loads of miles considering. My old Nankang's only lasted about 14k miles. Currently got Falken's which are lasting well, done 4k so far and not much wear.

IMO, never skimp on tyres. Budget tyres could end up costing you a lot, especially with a turbo [-X

My F1s have lasted 12k miles so far and still got a couple of months left I would say. This is varied driving, motorway driving for a fair bit too.

I never do burnouts, rarely wheelspin and keep the car fairly controlled (mainly cause the tyres stick so well!). That said, I don't drive like a granny at all.

Wheel alignment will make a lot of difference if you are getting uneven wear. Incorrect tyre pressures wil also cause this.

dawolf,

RE: your Nankangs
Were you doing much mad wheel-spinny stuff with yours or were you just raking about with revs and taking the odd high-speed roundabout, like I do?

my F1's have been on for about 15months now and 15k ish miles - fronts still have loads of tread, back have a couple of months left in them.

Yeah I do tend to drive quite fast and spin the wheels on occasions, however I found out the tracking was out and I had uneven wear on the inside of the tyres.
