utterly desperate now!!!

help!!!

bit of a problem but a rather long story,
having decided that the front brakes on the '2' were officialy crap i decided to use a set of fc3s 4 pots which are great (disc thickness on both cars are 22mm so no problem with pad clearance) and ive built a couple of pretty meaty caliper adaptors to attach the callipers (just dont ask about mating the flexis ](*,) ) anyway the problem is this, the whole set up is based on a larger disc of 11.25" and guess what, im struggling to find after market mk1 discs in an 11.25" size (someone told me that an LDV van uses discs that would be perfect but alas no, bu88er) anway

does anyone know of anything that will do the job or failing that somewhere that does custom discs

many thanks
Mark

Discs closest to that size which will fit with little or no mods is the Toyota Celica GT4 ST185:

.. 277x28mm - bonus with these is that the hub centre is the right size and they're 5x100 pcd, so easy to redrill to 4x100.

Another alternate choice is VW Corrado 1.8 G60 Supercharged; 280x28mm

I have no idea what kind of offset you need with your setup though, sorry.

Hi Megatron

28mm thick bloody hell, no chance of those warping!!!
questions

now dont call me a dumb ass but is that a pic of an st185 disc on a mk1 calliper?

if so, how does a 28mm disc fit into a calliper thats designed for a 22mm disc, did you have to take some material of the pads, the reason i ask is that im using callipers from the rx7 and they are based around a 22mm thick disk as well.

the offset is absolutely identical to standard as im actually running the callipers right now using standard 10" discs (the car is of the road, its just to see really) and yes the pads overlap about 5 8th of an inch

thinking about it though, having the pads slightly overlapping on a 277mm disc might have its bonuses (no lip to grind of if i have to change pads) and its really only2.5mm less braking surface than an 11.25" disc (which is 282mm)

The Picture shows the ST185 disc fitted with an ST185 single pot caliper.

Its a good upgrade as the parts all bolt on, requiring only the disc to be re-drilled.

ST185 calipers come in two varients; The twin pot caliper uses the same size disc as the mk1b (256mm) and the single pot caliper uses the 278mm disc.

You can also use the later GT4 4 pot caliper - the boys at twobrutal have all the info.

Hi

did some research on this a while back and paul woods used the 4 pot st205 callipers, the only problem with his set up was that he had to lathe down the (st205) discs and tap the hubs, not all that convenient if you need new discs

the reason i chose rx7 callipers was er i had some. i did try fitting them around a standard mk1b disc but i wont go into that just now

the maximum disc thickness i can go with the rx7 callipers is 24mm and thats at a push, what i dont want to be doing is having to machine of pad material every time i need to change pads or have to lathe down discs so unfortunately the st185 discs are a no goer (unless they make them in a 24mm thick version) what im looking for ideally is a mk1b disc (or equivelant) in an 11.25" (285mm)

it does sound like i might be struggling a bit so if anyone knows a custom disc maker then please before i loose my sanity let me know

regards,
Mark

I can't see you getting a disc that diameter (which is pretty big compared to euroboxes) and relatively thin :(

These are all reasons we we stick with the Toyota based setups.

Redrilling the discs isn't hard, a bench drill or even a heavy duty electric drill will suffice. Yes ST205 discs need machining down, but most machine shops should be able to do that relatively cheaply for you... and I can't see a 300x30mm disc wearing out on a non mk1.5 MR2 in any space of time (heck, even on a mk1.5 it should last at least 3-4 years!)

ST185 setups are the way to go IMO, but I'm biased

the one big reason i switched to the rx7 set up was that i was sick and tired of seized sliding bushes, and the only reason i settled on the rx7 callipers over the st205 was the availability and price plus a set of pads are only £20

and i checked again, and there is an LDV van that uses a 275mm disc (close enough) and is 24mm thick, so hopefully it might be my saviour

as you can probably tell im not afraid of a bit of custom fabrication so your quite right redrilling discs wouldnt be the end of the world but in my case having to remove at least 2mm from each side of an st185 disc would cause more than a few headaches (especially as i suspect that it probably gives a minimum disc thickness of 27 or 26mm, not 100% sure on that one though)

and even bringing the thickness down to 24mm the only reason i could fit a 24mm disc in those callipers is that ive already machine the callipers to hold a bigger disc

anyway at the mo im still hunting, if worse comes to worse il have to have them custom made, just need to know who can do it!!!

Many thanks,
Mark Inglis
