Sat Nav / Tv / CD Player

Post by DazzaRev5Turbo »

I would like a system with all bits mentioned in title, which would you recommend?

This model has it all and possibility of freeview but seems pricey, any cheaper options known?

Yeah, but never be anywhere near as easy to use or as reliable as a proper in-car system.

I've looked at most of the options and decided to go for an all-kenwood setup. I'm going for a DDX 6027 head unit and a KNA-G520 natnav unit.

The only other thing I considered was buying a KNA-G520 and then buying one of those £200 head units off ebay.
The only problem would be that they don't have a touch-screen so you'd lose a lot of the functionality of the satnav system. It comes with a remote control so you could, in theory, still select all the options but it's much nicer to be able to tap at stuff on the screen.

If you're buying satnav, make sure you get one which accepts downloadable POIs (Points Of Interest) so you can download stuff like speed-camera locations and input them as POIs.
The thing that led me to the KNA-G520 is that it's made by Garmin and it accepts any POIs made for Garmin systems.

I did think about the whole car PC thing. I downloaded a bunch of the software and tried it out on my home PC (no touch screen, admittedly) and it's just not simple enough for anybody other than an "enthusiast" to use.
Having a car PC is very cool and, if you're clever enough to build it and use it, it'll give you THE best system around but I wanted something which would be utterly reliable and pretty-much idiot-proof.

I don't mean any offence to my missus (in case she reads this) but a ICE system isn't worth much if she can't just tune it to Radio 2 as she drives to the shops. car PCs just aren't normal enough to be used by th majority of people.

My system is in my bedroom more than its in the car lol!

Though to solve this i just run it through aux on a HU and all the basic ICE features are back! :P

The "carputer" sounds interesting!!.......... so this would work as a TV would it too? CD/DVD etc etc. Is there such a unit on the market or is it a build idea?

Mainly i just want a touch screen sat nav system, CD/DVD Player, TV but im stuck, dont know which type to look at, seen the Alpine D310 on a few sites but that costs about £1700 with TV antenna/Freeview.

Would have thought that would be just as capable models for less than this by now...anyone?

You can get the bits here: http://www.linitx.com

You do have to build them yourself but it's pretty straightforward. Screen, System Board, Power Invertor, Case then the usual bits you need for a PC; Memory, HDD, Keyboard & Mouse (cordless ;)) CD/DVD drive.
Then have a nose around the interweb and download some of the free software which is available. There's plenty of decent quality software out there.

Alas, not really.
There's only a handful of whizzy double-DIN head units around which have touch screens and they're all roughly the same price.
I picked the Kenwood items cos they're slightly cheaper and the satnav unit is made by Garmin.
The head unit doesn't do TV though. You need to add a seperate TV tuner unit which would crank the price up a bit... if I bought it, which I won't.

If you can live without the touch screen there are plenty of decent units available on fleabay. Just do a search for "double DIN" and have a nose through the results.
Be aware, however, that jap-market head units will be made to work from 65mhz to 90mhz rather than from 82mhz to 102mhz like in the UK.

If you choose to buy a stereo off a fleabay international seller, confirm it will tune from 82-102mhz.
Be totally clear that is is NOT a jap-market tuner with a frequency convertor fitted.

have a look around www.mp3car.com - some awesome free software (just rely on donations) and they have a shop so you can get an idea on price!

TV/DVD

Post by Tom Solan »

Hi,

I've some nice units with a motorised screen which has a PAL system TV incorporated into it, If you want to see some pics of one fitted in an MR2 take a look at www.nvicars.co.uk. I am happy to do you a good deal for cash. If you can't access the DVD section you may need to ebnable java script in your browser.

Cheers

Well I have just bought a Kenwood DDX7029 (pretty much for playing DIVX) and was wondering if anyone has fitted a DDX model themsleves?

I have heard that if you earth the handbrake wire on the back of the unit that it will then play movies on the go - whether the hand brake is on or off.

Would screwing the wire to the cage be suffice?
