Red paint fade - how to restore?

Post by GaryR »

I'm looking at a red t-bar that, like most of the red cars I've seen, has suffered paint fade on some of the panels.

Are there any tips/products that can bring the colour back, or is the only real solution to re-spray?

My MK1a is really bad (or used to be).

The way I have managed to get it looking good is using Autoglym Paint Renovator, followed by the Super Resin Polish and then finished off with the Extra Gloss Protection. I only use the paint renovator once each year. Sometimes, I do two rounds of the Polish before the gloss stuff.

My car is so bad it really needs a respray, but that can be done when the arches are sorted out. For now Autoglym all the way 8)

I don't fancy cutting the paint work back, but I've used Autoglym on the bike and it's been really good. I'll have a look around the car shops over the weekend and see if I can buy myself an orbital polisher and some Autoglym products.

I've looked at a number of blue cars, and it would be my prefered choice, only I've not found a good one yet. The condition of the car is more important (to me) than the colour, so I'm looking at both red's & blue's.

I wouldn't bother with an orbital polisher as most of them run out of steam before enough pressure can be applied. They could be pretty good for buffing after the polish has cured (set). Also Autoglym recommend leaving the residue to dry in straight lines rather than circular swirls.

Loads of elbow grease makes the job more satisfactory once done too. Although your arms and back may dissagree

Funny I prefer the red, but the problems with pre-1990's red fading, has always put me off - just don't go for white, as it shows the rust!!! :)

I don't like the white ones - always reminds me of the girls who used to wear white-shoes at the nightclubs I went to when I was at collage.....

Have you tried Poorboys products? I've seen pictures of a restored red FTO (can't find them now ) that looked awsome when done.

True, but my 5 year daughter has always wanted a pink car, so at least she'll be impressed. :)

Hi,

I hope you don't mind me 'barging' in on your site... Grace mentioned that some of you were having problems with tired and dull paint... I hope I can help!

I recently detailed one of the FTOOC Members FTO's in the SW unfortunately I did not take pics of before and after but the wing mirrors, spoiler, bootlid & bonnet had suffered from a weathered dull look. The owner was pretty happy with the result

I am not sure if you have anyone supplying you detailing products here on the IMOC but I am always happy to help advise and of course offer discounts and Group Buys  But don't want to step on anyones toes...

Poorboys Detailing Products are a professional product I have tried Meguiars, Megs Pro etc, AG and many others in fact I sell many brands but for people like us who's P&J means so much to them i only recommend the PB's range - its what I use on my FTO's and customers...
