Clean and Shiny Engine

Anyone have any good methods for cleaning up the engine. I have just got my 2 and want to make the engine nice and clean. I heard that steam cleaning was bad for them ? Am i destined for hours of painstaking labour using a cloth and some degreaser ?

Hi,

Put some gunk on with a paintbrush, leave for a minute and then wash off with some hot water. Covering electrical parts before you do so!

I used some soft wire wool, and some metal polish as there wasn't any oil on my engine, it was just covered in crud or the metal had oxidised in places. Came up quite nicely, though it takes a fair bit of time and is messy!

Decided to use cleaner and water on my mk1 sc.
Wish i hadn't as the car wouldn't start afterwards, had to get the RAC to take me home from my parents!

Hardly used any water but it did get into one of the sensors, which caused the problem, the RAC and myself thought water had got into the distributor!

I'm sure mk2's are similar when it comes to water in the engine bay, just too many sensors around, when it comes to water!!

I would advise as little water as possible, iwill never do it again,i feel hard word is the best way to go!!

if you are going to use water 1 have the engine running & two cover the electrics with plastic bags. Turtle Wax tyre shine (clear liquid stuff) bring hoses up like new - metal polish and elbow grease. If you have a T-Bar remove the cross member support to give yourself more room. Also remember that the side panels come off too if needs be.
